I am trying to find out the weight of a Packard 320 V8 in a 55 Hash. We may be looking at other drivetrain options rather than the Packard & Auto in it currently.

Thanks!

  • Can't say for sure about the Packard 320, but the AMC 250/287/327 family weighed in at 601 lbs.
  • That Packard V8 has to be one of the heaviest V8s around, my guess is right up ther with the early Chrysler Hemis. 900-1000 lbs+-? I think every other engine is lighter. Nothing wrong withe the engine, it's the miserable excuse for a transmission they put behind it.
  • Here are a few engine weights found on the Net:

    Cadillac 500 - 625 lbs

    331/392 Hemi - 729/745 lbs

    Later Hemi - 765 lbs

    Allison V-12 - 1160 lbs

You might get an answer from the Studebaker guys? I believe that same engine was in the 56 Golden Hawk. My buddy had one back in the early sixties ,a stick with OD. Absolutely no rear tire traction. I could give him a fit with my flat head six 59 lark.I agree.. Lord that was one HEAVY engine.
  • Thanks for the answers. I haven't picked the car up yet so I am trying to do some preliminary planning. I don't want to change the handling but I don't want to deal with the current transmission & only 230 HP when I can get 350 HP easily and weigh less.

Well Your Looking For 350 Hp Well The Amc 327 Puts Out 270 Hp And It Has A Jetaway Hydromatic ( It Is Almost Bulit Proof) Behind It In The 57 Hudson And Nash And It Will All Fit In With Out Changing Any Thing The Mounts All Fit And The Tranny Will Boilt Right Up To The Driveshaft And You Can Get It From A Rambler At A Great Price If You Find A Good Running Rambler With A Rotten Body Just Some Thing To Think About

  • Thanks Hash Guy. I may go that direction. I will pick the car up tomorrow and hopefully get some time off to start tearing into it soon.
