Spouting Off!!!!

Just wanted to spout off over a few parts suppliers I am dealing with. Went out today on this beautiful day with the intentions of making some progress on my '53 Super Wasp. First off, I was going to finish the installation of my new exhaust from Waldron's Antique Exhaust only to find out that they sent me the incorrect extension pipe to the muffler. It was not even close!!! Took pictures of the old exhaust as compared to the new one sent so that hopefully Waldron's will correct the problem. So then I thought I may as well move on to installing the new water pump I received from Kanter Auto Products. Again, a completely different water pump from who knows what. Don't even think that it is a Hudson pump. Anyway, It seems as though no matter what you do, a vendor will still screw up the order. I gave both of these vendors complete descriptions, motor size, pictures of the parts needed, emphasized that the parts needed were for a Super Wasp, not a Hornet. What does one need to do to get competent service today? Anyway, now I am going to send more pictures of what I need to these vendors and hope that they get it right the second time around.

  • Buy from Hudson guys, like Bill Albright, Randy Maas and Dave Kostansek. They don't have fancy color catalogs like Kanter, but they'll be more likely to send you the right part.

WELL AS SAID ABOVE DEAL WITH GUYS WHO KNOW THE THINGS YOU ASKING FOR DAVE Kostansek, REBUILDS WATER,FUEL PUMPS AND HE HAS ALL THE ING. PARTS YOU'LL EVER NEED : ON THE EXHAUST I WOULD HAVE TAKEN THE CAR TO A LOCAL MUFFLER SHOP AND HAD THEM TAKE OFF WHAT WAS ON THE CAR AND MAKE NEW STUFF THAT WOULD FIT IT COST A BIT MORE BUT NO HASSEL Bill Albright, Randy Maas ALSO HAVE ALOT OF PARTS AND THE KNOW HOW FOR WHAT YOUR LOOKING FOR THE FIRST TIME
  • May I add AL SAFFRAHN to the list! JIM GUINN also....Go to the Hudson People, and you'll get what you order.....Ken Cates for Electrical problems and other issues for sure...
  • I have been buying stuff from Hudson people. For the most part they are very good but it can even happen with them. I bought some rechromed bumper guards from a Hudson enthusiast for a '53 and what was shipped was bumper guards for a '49. Error in shipping most likely but it seems like this is happening too often to think it is funny.

  • 53hudsonguy,

To answer your question about what one needs to do to get competent service these days, here are my two cents:

Deal with smaller companies like those listed above. These guys know the cars and care about what they do. Also, avoid companies that employe sullen teenagers who could give a rats @ss if you get what you need.

By the way, Kanter really screwed up the water pump because the Super Wasp (262) and Hornet (308 ) use the same pump.

I agree with "deal with the smaller companies........" 100%. It is a sad thing, but there is a prevailing attitude among to many companies these days that says "screw the customer and service - always got more people coming thru the door." The American consumer is going to go after what he wants, no matter how bad the service. A glaring example is the cost of gas. Could the American consumer do something about it - you bet!!! But we don't want to be "inconvienced!!!" We'd rather gripe about the price than cut back on what we want to do. If we all cut back you better beleive the price would come down.

Now, all that said, I'd like to detail two experiences I recently had - both outstanding. I ordered a U. S. Coast Guard Retiree license plate to put on the front of my car, since TN only uses a rear plate. I ordered it from SoldierCity.com - and in due course got a beautiful license plate - frame!!! Ooops. Called the service number, got a nice lady, said they'd send the correct item immediately - which they did. A few days later came a beautiful license plate - frame!!!! Oooops again. Called again - lady asks if I can hang on a minute (their nickle so ok). She apparently went out to the stock room, got the correct item and took it to shipping. Several days correct item arrived - and keep the frames, not cost effective to have them shippied back.

2nd item - I ordered a book from Amazon.com. Didn't arrive, so figured lost. Called, immediate shipment of a replacement, no cost. Next day neighbor down the street shows up with the book - post office delivered to wrong place. Called amazon.com, they gave me instructions where to go to get info on returning item. Which I did - they paid postage.

So not everybody is a PITA.

  • Alex,

Although it may seem like it at times, I don't think businesses necessarily begin with a plan to screw the customer. However, I do think that many are poorly managed and the stock pickers and shippers are usually just preoccupied kids. After all, who but kids can survive on what little money jobs like those must pay. And, as I said previously, such employees could care less if anyone gets anything as long as they get their pay at the end of the week. When you're dealing with someone whose name is on the door so to speak, they'd be crazy not to bend over backwards to satisfy the customer, especially if they're selling specialized items that are not required to sustain life. People selling to a select market, such as to Hudson owners, are advised to play fair. After all, we have a good communication network and the bad news seems to get around even faster than the good.

Sorry to hear about you're misfortune. It just goes to show you that bad things can, and do, happen to good people. Glad to hear all worked out in the end. Now you can get back to more important things.
