What would you pay?

In the end - it won't be known until I do an exact inventory of rust, bodywork, and mechanical issues but, here's a poll to guess what I paid for the 50

  • Dan,

Are you gonna restore this one as well as the 49 C8?

Too early to tell yet - my initial feeling is the 50 gets somewhat restored to driver status and the 49 becomes the radical custom it's supposed to be and sadly anohter another year or 2 to completion.

The kicker for me will be if I can get it running and safe to drive locally without major mechanical overhauls to the engine and transmission.

I figured worse case I can sell the visor, twinh, and any additional parts to recoup my investment (or part or it thereof - you'll have to wait until the poll ends to see if I could get all or part of my investment back!)
  • That's cool. Keep us posted on the '50s progress.

Neat Drivemaster ! It's none of my buisness what you paid for that car, but it looks real good ! It's much better than many Hudsons from the snow belt ! It is better than my '50 that I am currently working on !

I know, this poll is just for fun, no one would really know what to pay unless they see it in person.

Given my VAST, VAST, VAST, experience dealing with Hudson rust I can say that this car is not perfect but compared to the 49...well it's not even a valid comparision!

My first pass looking at this car in the shop is it is in very good shape rust wise, little to no surface rust on exterior surfaces or jambs.

Drivers front floor pan has some small holes, all others are solid, perimiter frame rails look extrememly good with just typical surface rust prevelent on any of these cars not undercoated.

Bottoms of the doors look are not rusted at all - not like the swiss cheese on my 49.

Ken Amman has the floor pans, which are inexpensive and look and fit great. Most 48-50 Hudsons had a water sealing problem, which caused water to leak on the floor and rust the pans. Looks like a keeper!

Yep - put 2 of them in the 49 and they fit like a glove - the holes in this one can easily be patched - I don't think I'll have to replace any of them.

Another thing that is perfect on this car is the rockers - no rust holes and they appear pretty straight...I'd better take one off and have copies made eh? ;)
  • I think in today's market this is prolly a 2K car, maybe more. It seems clean and solid, and fairly complete. Get to a local hudson show, you will find all of the stainless, the long rocker strips will be sorta hard, but all of the lower side should be not terribly difficult. It looks functional with a bit of work. If the trans is tight, the engine free, it should be easy enough to get running. You'll likely need a clutch, some wiring work, a few tune up parts. Most of the stuff you need to get this mechanically ready for road use, is stocked on the shelves at Autozone. lemme know if you need part numbers, or reference numbers. fuel pump, brakes, electrical, etc...

do yourself a favor, disconnect the supermatic, it is not worth the wiring headache, and nightmares.... etc....

I'm becoming a big fan of the two tone colors like your '50. All you need on the interior is a Mexican blanket. I would love to take my spare Jet and transplant an engine into it, then do a satin primer with scallops and dress it up with rockabilly flair.

  • Dan;

I voted 0-2000 but I can't base my vote on anything but the pictures. That and I'm an old guy and I think everything cost too much anymore. Things are worth whatever people will pay for them and the more someone wants something the more likely they are to pay too much. It looks like a nice car though and if you are happy with what you paid then you made a good deal. I hope to get a stepdown someday and I'll pay what I need to in order to get one, then I'll have to be the one to decide if I've been taken. It looks like that would make a good project car.

  • Dan, My Dad once told me that it didn't matter what I paid for something as long as I was happy with the price and the item I bought. Several times, I've had friends tell me I paid too much for a car/truck, but then again I was driving the car/truck of (at the time) my dreams. Dreams and tastes change, but I can say that I have enjoyed 99% of the vehicles I have owned. Did I pay too much? Possibly. Did I get cheated? No, because I got what I wanted at a price I was willing to pay.
Looks like You did the same.
    Congratulations!

Words of wisdom right there, by BJ TN! Nice car, I voted 2 to 3. But a agree it's your call and I usually don't ask the price of someone's car and usually don't tell the price of one's I've bought. Not a big deal, just me I guess. I don't want to feel like I over paid either.

As for the rockers, if you think you could redo them and make a little money too? Go for it for sure! Lots of people would like new ones on there car. I thought about making some but I think they are too complicated to make like original. Also too many variations (wasp, hornet, two door, four door) to try and make. I'm kind of a chicken though. :-)

Agreed %100. To me a good deal is mutual for both parties, I'm not into lowballing someone just for the challenge. I'll pay what I can and what seems fair.

It looks like a pretty solid 2k-3k car to me also, but that's just what I can see from across the country.

I know, I thought this poll would be fun and help others hone their guestimating skills!

No one would really know what to pay unless they see it in person.

The big difference for me with this one will be if it truly is a runner, if it's a runner - then I'm happy with what I paid for her

What I was thinking with the rockers is to see if I can find a company locally that can cold draw reproduce the entire rocker for a 4 door, someone with a shorter version could at least cut-n-splice them down to size.

At a minimum reproducing the front 2' and the rear 2' would go a long way in helping a lot of folks out...rockers are one of those pieces that always rot out and are difficult to find and ship when they're old and weakened by age, fatigue and rust (hey that sounds like me!)

Good ideas on the rockers! Didn't think about the splicing, that would fix most of the rockers out there. They seem to rust out from the inside toward the ends, your right.

You do have me thinking though. Now that I see your poll, most people are saying under 2g's! Did I get taken when I bought mine?!?! I paid $2,500 and it didn't have an engine or trans! oops! haha, nah. I'm happy with the car AND the price I paid. Hope you are too. Now all I need to do is, well re-do EVERYTHING! haha By the way, lets see some updates on Rambo's Ride.

We definitely need to look into the rockers - I need some for the 49!
  • I voted for under $2K, not because that is what I think the car is worth, but because Dan said he went to look at it thinking about maybe being able to score parts. If I am looking for parts I normally don't buy a whole car unless it is really cheap. Normally. I'm still thinkin' Dan stole it. Either that, or Rambo pissed on the seat and he had to buy it. :D

Well, without giving the exact amount I paid, but a whopping 84% of the 56 faithful who responded thought I paid too much, only 1 person thought I paid more.

So if you can't guess it was choice #3 (3001-4000)

At this point everything checks out to think that this car is a runner - there's about 350.00 worth of Metro rubber for the door seals, most if the side trim (I think) and the car came with the visor, twin-h manifold.

Even the seat covers might be salvagable for now and put money towards getting the car safe.

So - when I hear that motor purring - I'll be really happy - no matter what I paid!
  • Dan, if you're happy then you paid the right amount. I don't know anymore what anything is worth as you can tell by how I voted in the poll. It looks like you got a keeper though, how does Rambo like it?
