Does anyone know if a 35 Terraplane head (6 cyl) is interchangeable with a 39 head? Or how can one tell the difference in them? Both have "Power Dome" stamped on the top. One is on the engine and the other is laying on the floor.

They are actually quite different. The '35 head has a raised ridge along the centre, containing the water jacket, with longer studs along the centre line, and the water pump is mounted on the front of the head. '36-'39 heads are the same pretty well, though there are slight differences in compression ratios. they are flat across the top, and the water pump is mounted on the block.

Thanks Geoff. Will look at them tonight. One on the car has a crack in it and will have to see if I can get it fixed. Was hoping to just swap heads as the spare looks to be in great shape. Will get ahold of Dale Cooper and start gathering parts.

  • HI JIM, If that is an external crack only , not needing machine work, your maintaince guy can fix it. Just "V" the crack and use NIROD to weld it. I've found that cast iron likes to be preheated good in an area around the crack , { SAID PREHEATED NOW, DON"T GET IT HOT ENOUGH TO CAUSE WARPAGE }and cooled down slowly useing a torch as soon as you finish the weld and keep backing off. Keeps it from recracking at the weld edge.

    Bud,

I found out (I think) that I have a spare head (both heads have the mounting of the water pump flange) that looks good. I will take the spare to the machine shop, let them clean and check for warpage and then install that this winter. Then I can play with the cracked head sometime.

Still not sure what engine block I have. Any way to tell by engine numbers?

If the block still has the water jacket attached, you can tell by the water outlet - the '34-'35 motors with the water pump in the head have the water outlet coming from the bottom of the jacket, the later ones ('36 onwards) it comes from the top. Plus the earlier blocks have a longer set of studs in the centre row.
