Oil pump rebuild

I am rebuilding my oil pump (308 Hornet) and purchased a new gear, cover gasket and the body to engine block gasket from Dale Cooper. Two problems: first the gear has a hole for the retaining pin on one side only. It doesn't go all the way through. My machinist can drill through but I don't know if that is necessary. Is it?

Second problem - the cover gasket is a fairly thick cork gasket that has an inside diameter that is considerably larger than the outside diameter of the outer rotor in the pump. In fact it almost reaches out to the bolt holes. If I use it, the cover will not sit flush on the body of the pump. Am I missing something or is this not the correct gasket?

Any help from someone who has rebuilt an oil pump would be appreciated.

  • Ed- The cork "ring" fits into a groove on the outer face of the oil pump housing and the cover bolts up against it. The oil pump drive gear has to be drilled through and a pin installed through and sweged on each end to secure it in place. I have used split pins ( with locktite) without a problem.Something to watch is that the gear will go on the shaft two ways. If you put it on wrong it will be hard to get the distributer in time and have the the distributer timing adjustments close to being centered, with the vacumm advance unit setting at about 10 to 11 0'clock. Ed,the[2] 1/4-20 bolts pull this gasket into place and then the [3] 3/8's-16 bolts go thru the pump body and hold it to the block. You will have to save the old pin,or buy a new one[McMaster-Carr catolog]line up the hole in one side then drill it thru, drive in the new pin,or old one if you were able to save it.Do you have a mechanical procedures manual?? If you don't,it would be something you should make a priority to purchase!!

Thanks for the replies. I will have the hole for the pin drilled. I haven't found the groove in the body for the cork gasket yet but maybe it is just oil covered. I will clean it up more and hopefully locate the groove. By the way, I do have the procedures manual and it has been a lifesaver on a number of occaisons.

That miffed me too when rebuilding my engine. Why is the gear only drilled out on one side. Other motors I have done when replacing the gear the hole is drilled through. Seems logical to me.
  • i would imagine they leave it so you can finish it to suit YOUR OWN pump shaft and ensure a good fit with the pin
