voltage regulator

I have a 53 hornet. However there is no data plate on the generator.Between the two choices of voltage regulators VR-25 and Vr-4 which would any one say is the best REG to use. Is there much of a differance other than placement of the Batt terminal?

  • As I understand it, 1953 was a year where two (2) different models of generator and regulators were used. It is also my understanding that you must follow the factory criteria to match the generator and regulator.

The Hudson Master Parts Catalog say, "Use 308990 regulator (VBE-6104A) with 308391 & 308988 generators only. 306356 regulator (VRP-6101B) required for generator 302795 and may be used with 308988 generator."

So, you must somehow determine exactly what generator you have or replace your generator and regulator in order to get a match.
  • Ron, It really depends on the model generator you have in your car. If your model generator is a GGW 4802 then you have a 45A generator and need a model VBE 6104 regulator. If you have a model GGW 4801 generator you need a model VBE 6101 regulator since you have a 35 A generator. In 1953 Hudson boosted up the amperage and so it was a bit of a transistional year for which model generator you had. Don't know about the numbers you gave{VR 25 and VR 4} but you may want to have your generator checked for output and then make the right purchase.

Thanks for getting back so soon. I used to have a Standard VR-4 but changed it to a Echlin VR-25( I don't have a cross referance for those #s so I can"t tell what Gen they match) The reg has been on the car for 10 Years I have an Optima batt that probably needs replacement but forgot to log the date of purchase. I checked the Reg on a full charged batt and at 1600 rpm I got 8.8 volts charge rate .Tried a differand batt and got 8.2 I went to change to the old VR4 but to my dismay ,the batt cables were just a bit short to reach to the terminal. That VR4 has the terminals F&A on the bottom and the Batt term on the top the VR25 are all on the bottom. I would guess that the V reg needs adjustment .What do ya think?
  • Ron, the Echlin VR 25 is a 6 volt 37-41 amp positive ground regulator. Don't know about the Standard VR 4. maybe someone else has a book on them. Echlin claims that this is the replacement for the VBE 6101 regulator. That being the case I would venture to say you have a 35 amp generator. That is merely a WAG.

The Standard VR 4 regulator is the replacement regulator for 45 amp GGW Series generators (4801B and 4802A) . The 35 amp generator is a GDZ6001B. Standard does not list regulator for this generator. But the Echlin VR 25 crosses to a Standard VR 2 regulator.

Is there a way to tell which generator Is in the car without a data plate?GGWorGDZ?

The difference is in the armature - the GGW armatures are bigger than than GDZ in the physical size of the windings. However, you would have to have the two side by side, dismantled, to determine which is "big". Sorry 'bout that!

You can use the VBE 6104 regulator with the 35 amp generator, by resetting the maximum current to 35 amps.

Thanks for all your input. Soon after I posted the last question I searched a bit closer and discovered that the generator designers really are brilliant. At the rear of the gens casing near the bearing embosed in the case are the letters WWG-2. We have a winner! thanks guys.

When all else fails, check out this web site:

    http://www.freewebs.com/hudsontech/index.htm

Click on the Manufacturers link at the top of the page, then scroll down (in your case) to 1950-1957 Electrical Equip. and Fuel System Data - or click on "Edit" in the tool bar, then click on "Find (in this page) and finally type "1950-1957" in the box and click on "Find next".

1953 Hudson early used generator GDZ-6001B. 1953 Hudson later, 1954 exc Hudson Jet and 1955 Hornet V-8 Ser. 80 used generator GGW-4801S.

The early 1953 Hudson used regulator VRP-4004P on the following: 1952 Hudson all, 1953 all w/GDZ generator exc. Jet.

Voltage regulator VBE-6101A was used on 1953 (later) Hudson, 1953 Jet and 1954-1955 Hudson all.

  • If any of the HETers still need a Postive ground Volts regulator NOS. There are two on eBay.

One lo and one hi amp type.

just bought one ( wgw gen-45amp) from NAPA. Echlin part #vr-22.THE 35AMP reg is the vr-25 cost is $67 and $50 so watch how much you pay.
  • The HET parts interchange manual posted on my website has a NAPA ECHLIN catalog extract in it... page 28. It lists the 1948 thru 1953 vehicles with GDZ Generator as VR25. On the notes page following page 24 the 1948-1949 Hudson regulators are listed as Borg Warner R170 or Echlin VR-25. The 53 thru 55 vehicles with GGW generator use the VR27. ( A VR27 is currently on ebay as shown in previous post).

So, the answer is: The OEM AutoLite VRR-4001A regulator is replaceable with a VR-25 or R-170

Most or the 6 Volt regulators can be adjusted to meet the demands of the cars electrical system in relationship to the generator output. These proceedures are in MOTORS Manuals and the counterbooks available from sources like eBay etc..

    Good Luck

Well, unfortunately, '48 - '49 Hudsons use GEC three brush generators. "50 -'52 Hudsons use GDZ two brush generators. I don't think there is an aftermarket replacement for a AutoLite VRR-4001A regulator anymore.
