You know, I went through the other thread about opinions on this car...restore.vs.rod

She looks to be in decent shape, and I understand it's a runner, why not do a little of both, not a full restoration, but not a full custom either?

Thing is, a full restoration is big $$ and unless your name is Albright or Sallon ;) it takes years to gather all the parts and do the work!

Building a full custom takes nearly as long and is simialar in costs (although I'd argue unless you get crazy, a restoration is always more than a custom)

I've now got 1 of each going, the 49 Custom I started with, and the 50 Stocker I just picked up.

The 50 is just in so much nicer shape than the 49 and it appears to be a runner, so I'm going to get it running and safe (brakes, wiring, tires, etc) and drive the darn thing while I finish the 49!

The 50 came with a TwinH in the trunk, so It's gotta find it's way on there at some point.

OF course you can always go exotic like these guys...

  • First, I got to say, I really like the fact that Rambos got one of each going now, so when he gets his 49 done, and finds the 50 is so much cooler, and drives so much better, he can come back on here, and we can say, told you so....

    hehe....

anyway, I think that as far as costs go, it all depends on how much work you can or want to do yourself. It adds up quick to have someone do a car for you, either way. I would think a few years ago, what Dan said, was correct, but now, with the influx of sorta Kustoms, rat rods, and full blown Kustoms, it costs more to do a nice Kustom, than it does to do a nice restoration. Here's my rationale on the matter, and comment as you all wish...

Kustoms are more popular, because fewer and fewer people opt to find the HTF parts, want to sink the $$$$ in the chrome, or do the research to what is correct and proper in terms of restoration. While the Kustom crowd has a lot to deal with, they set their limits of possibility, the sky is the limit, and so is the bankbook. Let's face it, to get one from restorable to back on the road takes a lot of effort, regardless of your ending point. I guess what a lot of people end up thinking is that if they modernize components, then it will be longer before they need to mess with it again.

I don't know, wish I had the answers...

As far as your 41, I would prolly restore it, or at least get it to be a neat driver, maybe maintain the splasher and all, who knows. Sounds like from the other threads, a 262 or 308 is a lot more work that I originally thought....

This escaped my attention - what gives?

I saw that too. I was surprised that it sparked no interest. It looks like a very decent candidate for a resto or custom...

I saw it too. But with shallow pockets, I will deal with getting project two after project one is finished, or at least finished to the point of driveabilty.

But who knows how many "PM's" he has received, maybe it's sold already.
  • Looks like Calif. plates. Where are you located?
  • The reason I am thinking of cutting it loose is because I have been working overseas for some time now and don't really see myself going back any time soon. Maybe a few more years out here or forever since I like being an ex-pat.

I bought the car in summer of 2005. It has been parked since then on my cousin's storage lot in Ventura county near Camarillo.

The possibilities at the time were to move back to and settle in Southern California but I get stir crazy too easy in Suburban America.

I lived in Sarajevo for a few years and am now working a contract in Iraq. I still have ties to Sarajevo, Bosnia and know many automotive craftsmen there so if I were to go back, I would be able to bring it up to speed cheaply and easily with their help.

There are too many "if's" in the picture though so reality must dictate my inevitable choice to sell.
  • Now i see the car i still say restore it. It would look great with some wide whites a nd a maroon or dark paint job.

That is pretty much the direction I wanted to take it in. Maybe with a slight rake or airbags.

Many thanks to Rambos and Mark for posting the TURBO-262-46-Hudson pictures.

It is my every day driver and fun to drive, manymany trouble free miles in city and openroad. One BIG-MISTAKE I made was i did not wrap the Ex Manifold and that 300 degree heat takes some power out of it.

The turbo comes in at about 1900 RPM and then , Look Out. That worn out 262 thanks its a 308 ++

    Thanks to all Hudsonly Rudy

I can't believe you don't have head gasket problems. Did you do something special for a gasket?
  • Why not just make a big Hudson Rat
it's inexpensive, creative and fun. Just don't go too nuts on it so it can be done differently by yourself or someone else later.

    My two cents

No special Gasket BENT. It has a 232 iron Head milled .040. I only put 5-6 lbs of Boost and I only Hold it there for about 5- 7 seconds, maby a little longer at times. I dont want to X-Ray the block yet with broken parts.

This was to be a short test on the 262 eng then we would install a T-04 TURBO on the 308 that is built and just setting on the floor but, It is FUN to drive so, we dont know when that will be.

So far the gasket is holding. ( the MSD-Boost Control helps as it Retards the timing when bust comes in) The eng is only Over-Loded when you need it so, eng is normal until you Stab It to the floor.

    Hope this helps. Rudy
