Somone else is trying to sell my coupe!

Somone who had bid on my coupe last month wrote me to tell me that my car was for sale again on ebay -- except this time by a different owner and in a different state! The seller says that he'll accept cash in person. I guess I better keep an eye on my driveway as there could possibly be a late night transaction! I'll, of course, notify ebay, but maybe I'll wait to see if it reaches my former reserve of $1850.

An interesting thing about that link that I just posted - in it's pre-parsed state it's two or three times longer than any I've ever posted before. Also, the vast majority of it looks like the last part that you see above after the "...". I don't know enough about computers or programming to speculate on the matter, but perhaps there's ways of inserting a listing without ebay oversite. What ever the case, it would sure be a nicer world if people like this guy would simply get a job!

This is a common e-bay scam. Take the picture from an unsold listing and use it for a bogus listing.

Also, the "seller" of your old car has zero transactions....a major red flag.

How do they manage to close the sale?

James, this morning I e-mail the seller and asked a bunch of questions. I have not heard back yet. I guess not knowing the answers he can't respond !! If he does respond with bogus answers I'll ask for pictures. Richie.

I'll bet that's it. It never really is about selling the car, but it's about collecting the down payment.
  • that is dirty, i would meet with him and talk. a dozen loud hawgs pulling up your driveway seems to put the scammers in a talkative mood all of a sudden, works well. belive me. we set up camp on a guys front lawn a couple of years back, he cut us off and then headed for home scared and stoned. two bikes went down and as we followed him he runs in the house, so we pull up {14} harleys. on his front lawn. no lights went on and except for the guys talking it was quite. till the guy s friend called the cops, he thought we would leave, lol. no chages against us, him . he went away in cuffs. true story. dermott:eek:

James P., wouldn't you want to report this to Ebay?
  • Looks like the seller pulled the auction this morning as "item is no longer available for sale."

I will still contact ebay about it. I was letting it play out for a while for my own amusement. I wouldn't be surprised at this point if ebay pulled the listing for the simple reason that you can't state the "Wasp - Like Hornet" in the title. Remember that nonsense?
  • yeah, I saw the car back up, and was thinking that OHio was more appealing to me, for this car.... I started putting two and two together, and figured it was a bit of a scam.

Actually, someone on here pointed this one out for me as a potential project, and that's where it all started to add up. Too bad, I would still like the car, but $$$$ and distance keep me from owning it. Oh well.... Someday....

It already has a new owner. Walt Norem from this forum is taking the Wasp and the Hornet that I had listed at that time. He lives just accross the border in Iowa, so it's not all that far a drive. In exchange for the two cars, I get some body work and a paint job on my '50 Commodore. We're both pleased with the arrangement.
  • thats great james, barter. who needs credit cards? just lots of friends. i am glad we are a strong club and look out for each other the best we can. there is a sweet 54 hornet red coupe 10.5 thousand, buy it now. 280170072370 that one looks good. i would go to northwest coast for this , i wish.:)

Sometimes the scammers are lucky enough to get the unwary buyer to send the whole amount via Western Union before they go underground again.

    They're out there.
  • If the listing is just plain gone, eBay pulled it. A seller can only end the auction, you'd still see the listing showing as closed with a reason at the top of the page.

It's very common for them to hijack an account or three, copy an auction for a car and list it with a silly lowball price, and try and get you to fall for the Buy It Now. Sometimes they'll hijack a bunch of accounts and repost it constantly trying to find a sucker.

You probably missed my point when I refered to a thread that I posted last month, "Ebay Declares Wasp Not LIke Hornet". Ebay pulled my first listing after two or three days because I used the word "Like" in the title. I had to relist the Wasp deleting "Like Hornet". from the title. I found the whole business silly, iritating and fairly pointless. I mean, after all, a Wasp really is like a Hornet, isn't it? If it got any more "like" it would become "same". This clown who tried to relist my car for his own benefit chose to use my first listing, the one with "Like" in the title. The reason that I let this fraud play out for a while is I was curious to see how long it would take for ebay to pull it for the second time.
  • "like" is keyword spamming because people will say something is "like new" - well that means it's used, but it comes up when people search for New items. Now in 10 years I have never used "new" as a search parameter there. I don't get it either, but it's their site and their rules.
