Factory Wheel Color

Seeing Bill A's new wheels is timely, as I was just going to post a question to veterans here:

When my 49 Comm 8 Conv Bro left the factory, what color were the wheels painted? Were they the body color (which is what I was planning on doing), or were they black or some other color?

Thanks

Seems to me that the '49 wheel color was either (depending on body color) red or pale yellow.
  • Body color was common as were red and pale yellow. Then again, the factory would do whatever color the customer ordered and paid for.

I was always under the impression that for 48-49 the red wheels were only on the gray, and bronze colored cars. All others had cream colored wheels.

My Dad had a maroon Super 6 coupe that he purchased new and it had red wheels.

My 48 sedan is also maroon with red wheels. I believe it is original, although the cream might have looked better.

I have a sales brochure from '49 and the wheels in the brochure are either red or pale yellow. Also the parts manual does not show any body color paints for wheels any earlier then '51.

That is correct. Durig the step down era, wheels were either cream or red in '48, '49 & '50. In '51 they started painting the wheels close to body color in what they called wheel enamel.

  • My '49 is a gold/bronze color, and while it shows signs of a same-color repaint at some point, the wheels are red and seem original.

One of our members stated in a previous thread on the subject that Hudson offered many wheel color options, but I've only ever seen the red and yellow. He also made the point, though, that while the bodies were lacquer, the wheels were enamel. That does seem logical. The body of my '50 was originally painted "Revue Red" and I'm at the point, myself, where I'm going to repaint the red color on my wheels. The original red on my wheels is still nice enough that I'm sure I can approximate the factory red, but if any of you know of a factory formula, please let me know.
