Exhaust possibilities

Well after a little mishap with my new engine, I was lucky enough to crack my super rare 55 exhaust elbow. Everyone is beating me that I should have headers on an engine as modified as mine. I went with my current setup only to save a few $$$$ since I had spent so much on the motor and it was already ported and polished when I put the Twin H on. I have a almost brand new 2 1/2 inch exhaust with a Dynomax muffler. Looking at the Clifford site, their headers are set up with dual 2 1/2. My 2 1/2 is pretty tight as is. What have some of you tried running the headers that will work and fit well? I am not sure what they are thinking here with the dual outlet as the stepdown doesn't have much room under there. Maybe there is something I am missing. Thoughts or comments?

Thanks,

  • Take a look at this gallery on my site shows dual exhaust from header on a 54 sedan.

I may be more confused now. It appears only glasspacks will work and I can see that and the tailpipes, but the rest of the pictures aren't making sense. Looks like I am going to have to get back under it and study the situation
  • You can use proper mufflers if you have one forward and one towards the back on the dual pipes.

I bought a single (2-1/2") outlet header from Clifford around the year 2002, and I love it. I'd be surprised if they don't still offer one. There are other people building 'em, and I've seen the flanges offered on eBay pretty often lately. If you bought the flanges you may find a welding shop that will fabricate one for you. I'd guess that a shop that specializes in welding tubing, such as a race car chassis shop, would be able to set you up.

That's what I would like to have. I got a quick response from them yesterday,I will ask them about that.

I have the single outlet header from Clifford when Jack redid them. Not totaly happy with the position of the outlet flange, but it works. I have a stroker 308 and I have a new flowmaster muffler. I took it out last month for the maden run on the freeway. Everything sounded good until I got it up to 70 and it set up some kind of harmonics and I could not hear myself think. I could not hear the person in the other seat yelling. Down below 65 and everything is quite. Above 70 and you need ear plugs. Time for a new, new muffler. I was told this one is sized to small for the exhaust flow. It is a 2.5 in and a 2.5 out so I guess I don't understand. But I can tell you it is not right.

When I restored my 54 Hornet several years ago I went with a single 2 1/2 "exhaust with the stock manifold. I was not happy with the exhaust sound so ordered the Clifford Header several months ago. The muffler shop that I use said going to dual exhaust I needed to go to 2" duals to fit in the space that the single exhaust uses. Since a Hornet engine does not put out big time HP dual 2" exhaust are plenty. At the rear axle he moved the left pipe so it would come out as most dual exhaust show from the rear of the car. He used mufflers that fit going up towards the rear axle. It is a very nice installation. I asked for a nice rapping sound and it does bark when I get on it.

That's what I have heard to,two 2 inch though a couple have said two 2 1/4. My motor is built up pretty heavy. I have been e-mailing with Clifford, but I think I will just call them tomorrow and try and pin something down. I am happy with the sound of my single 2 1/2 with the Dynomax muffler. Flowmasters are too noisy.
  • My 308 engine out of my 54 Hornet sedan is in the rebuild shop as we speak. I have ordered the Clifford dual outlet headers. What kind of mufflers are you using? I wouldn't mind a little exhaust rap myself but not to loud.

Thanks for any info you can provide.

I like the Dynomax's. They have a nice deep sound and have consistantly scored at the top for exhaust flow in every article I have seen. Flowmasters and glasspacks are too raspy sounding with a 6 IMHO.

I spoke to Larry at Clifford. Nice guy. I am going to pick up a header and Y-pipe from him then plug into my single 2.5 system.

Make sure you start it up with the headers open before you seal it up. Puts a big smile on your face.

Speaking of that, since I don't know exactly how these come out in the car, would it be safe to drive open for about two miles to my exhaust shop, I don't see why anything would be hurt there, but I may as well ask someone who has already done it.

I've got dual exhaust Cliffords now, but the mufflers are the standard oval type, and much to quiet- except when I'm "on the road", I prefer less noise. So I'm going to get exhaust cut-outs for each side, and will plumb the outlets back into the tailpipe at a point behind the mufflers. Cut-outs open= straight pipe out the back. More importantly, I can control the level of rabble-rousin' by partially opening them. They actually have cutouts now that are operated electrically, but I'll probably just go with the old lo-tech "Honest Charley" specials.
