A friend of mine in Lofan is building this '37 Ford street rod for a guy...fiberglass body from Montreal, Fatman, SoCal, etc. - all new parts. The guy is spending 25 large just on the PAINT! this shot is before they do the graphics. Dosen't make sense to me, but then I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, so maybe I'm missing something here...

It seems to me that he might be paying for the crowd standing outside the paint booth. I don't get it either. I guess I would rather paint it 3 times myself to get it right and spend the 23,000 elsewhere.
  • Most of the time when you hear of the $25K paint job, the cost is more like a $20K body prep job. Then $5K for the actual paint. I had a friend that worked for the Egyptian in Dayton, Ohio. He told me it was not unusual for them to spend 200-300 hours doing body prep before painting. They did beautiful work and did many show cars. But I would never have spent the money they got for them. Mostly because I didn't have it, but then again I have always been frugal. (Before anybody else says it, I'll admit it I'm Cheap):D

Another case of more money than brains....This guy probably spends alot of his time at Barrett-Jackson also....DUHH
  • And, here is how this always turns out. He'll be a sensation during the debut year of the car, maybe get a few magazine shots, win a few shows or go home disgruntled that he didn't win, and then after the new wears off the car, it'll be another of the multitude cookie-cutter cars that's too nice to drive and nobody remembers or wants anymore. I'm not sure where these cars go but they seem to just disappear after a few years. But hey, he had his moment of glory. If that's what he's after-go get em tiger!

Personally, I'd much rather have a unique car that stops people every time you take it out cause, it's not of the ordinary. It's a Hudson, or a Studebaker, or a REO, Hupmobile, ok, maybe even a rare body style Chevrolet (if there was such a thing). And, if ya can't drive it then I truly feel you're missing the biggest point of the hobby, FUN!

I do appreciate all cars of all caliber, but I do have opinions as well...
  • Amen rarerodder!
  • Thats why I drive my 34 hudson street rod all the time.Peope look at it because it is different and it does not have a 25000 paint job.

I agree that this is usually the case, BJ, but this was a brand-new fiberglass body that was prepped for paint in my friend's shop. The $25,000 is pretty much just for the paint. I don't know how much this guy is paying my friend to build this car...If he wanted me to know, he'd tell me...but I'm guessing the owner will have at least a hundred and a half in it before he's finished. If I made a list of things I could do with that kind of money, Classic Car's server would crash...
  • For $25,000 you can get 5 years at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas
