the big advantage of the '40 o. d. is that it so can be installed in earlier models without cutting the frame!
I gave one to my buddy Buzz Stahl for his '34 Railton. We carefully removed the hood & grill, pulled the engine, then did a "trail run" to make sure it would fit into the '34 Hudson frame without cutting (which he wouldn't do - if it wouldn't fit without cutting he wasn't going to use it).
He also fit a top shifter so it would be like the Railton, "floor shift", & put in a little switch to toggle back & forth between o.d. & straight shift. It cruises effortlessly at 75 mph.
His is the Railton that once belong to John Bond, owner of Road & Track.0 -
Cliff, I didn't realize you were going for the Electric Hand conversion, on your overdrive. For your information, Del Crawford (of the H-E-T) did such a conversion in the 1970's, on the 1940 OD in his (of all things!) LWB 1937 Hudson Eight. He told me that he welded studs to the side of the transmission case. He used the 4.59 rearend ratio (though frankly, I'd think that an 8-cylinder would be perfectly adequate to power a 4.11 with overdrive, since my '37 six does a reasonable job under the same circumstances).
I'm told that the car is now owned by Glen Kellogg, of Michigan. He's listed in the roster, as is Del.
Please take notes and make photos of your conversion....I'd like to try the same thing, someday.
When I said "no such animal" (answering the question of which overdrive you can bolt an Electric Hand to), I meant that no such overdrive was made to accommodate E.H. However, when a Hudsonite has a dream and gets a welding torch in his hands, anything is possible!0 -
