Anyone here had problems with starter gears blowing apart? I have shattered two in the last week on my new motor. They just blow apart. They don't appear to be very strong looking. Is there something better or stronger that can be used? I am getting tired of going through this. The last time it actually jammed up and I couldn't push start it until I pulled that starter loose. Of course all the teethe were down in the clutch cover. About 5 pieces.

  • very unusual problem to just come apart, sounds like your right about not good quality. Think I'd look for one of the guys in HET that specs in rebuilding starters. And talk to him. They're a bit more reliable than other sources for good parts.

not good quality or not being used as designed? are you hitting a 6 volt starter into a tight engine with 12volts?
  • I Had The Same Thing Happen Once On My Car. It Was A 6 Volt Started With 12 Volt System, It Happened When I Got A New Battery. I Guess I Bought Too Strong Of One. I Had The New Started Changed Over To 12 Volts, And Have Not Had A Problem Since.

If you have a stepdown engine, make sure you have the proper starter studs installed. If you have incorrect studs, the starter may not be properly aligned. The studs are mounted from the back side of the plate and then the bell housing is installed. Not easy to corect if you didn't do it right the first time. I think Bill Albright has the correct ones. Good luck.

The starter has been rebuilt to 12v. The studs are what was in the car when I got it. The have a nut that locks them in from the back side. Wasn't a problem before the engine blew and I rebuilt it. Not sure how the studs have any effect. The starter can't go in or out any farther than the plate will let it once it is tightened down. Looking at the broken gear,it just doesn't look very strong for what it has to do. Aere these only available used? Maybe the ones I have have been old and brittle.

In all the years i have been "messing" with Hudsons, I only broke one starter. It was a bent shaft on a 262 with 12 volts. I found that the studs had been replaced with bolts. I run 12 volts on a six volt starter on my Super Six now with the correct studs and have had zero failures. If the studs are not the correct ones, the starter could be mounted either too close to the flywheel or too far away. I have seen several Hudsons with replacement "bolts" (like mine!)or studs that don't fit into the hole correctly or were too small in diameter, letting the starter move around in relation to the crank center line. You may have been lucky on the original set up that it was bolted and tightened down in the correct position, then that was lost after reassembly. Just a thought..

Will have to see what the starter guys comes up with. It is wired to 12V and unless it is an alignment issue or bad gears, that is where I am now. Wonder if one of those trick mini starters could be made to work. They seem to making them for most everything.

    Rudy,

You run quite a bit of modified stuff, have you ever experienced this before? One would think if you ever ground a starter when the engine was running this would happen everytime. People do it all day in their cars. I have done it on occassion but never have blown a gear to pieces, especially twice, the damage looked the same both times. About 5 pieces.

Never broke the drive gear.Only the Nose adaptor on the Automatic starters.

    (that is another story)

The drive gears are Heat-Treated and if they are to hard they will split down the lower part of the tooth. And if the gear has the wrong PITCH it will not Mesh with the Ring gear, causing the teeth to fail.

I have good service with the ones from the Co that i sent you. ( tell them if it is STD trans.or AUTO. Thanks Rudy

Can someone post a picture of the shouldered bolt with the dimension of the shoulder. The Shouldered stud is missing off of my car too. It seems like a bushing slipped over the replacement bolt to line up the starter would be easier than pulling the transmission.

    Thanks,

    Rich
