53 Hubcaps

Comments

  • Who in their right mind would pay this much for hubcaps? Although NOS caps are rare, you could have a load of used caps rechromed for the amount of money the bid is currently at. I guess will find out if this is legit if the caps don't reappear on eBay. Is it just me or does it seem that many items seem to sell, only to reappear in a few days with no mention of a deadbeat bidder.

I found several good used hubcaps for my '49 and had the best ones rechromed for a lot less. Todays chrome is much better than it was in the fifties.

Maybe the guy who purchased the NOS steering wheel center for 48-49 and paid over $900.00 bought these too.

Those are stainless not chrome. Cost is around $80 a piece to have stainless straightened and buff per hubcap. Chome is around$100 per hubcap 50 and 51 were chrome and 52-53 were stainless I believe

    Russ,

Now that you mention it, they do look like SS. Regardless of size, I pay much less than $80.00 each to have stainlesss caps and trim rings redone. I guess costs can vary. Still, $80.00 or $100.00 per cap is a bargain compared to $1,600.00.
  • Looking at the bid history, the last "real" bid was $130

Looks to me like they bead blasted the backs and polished the fronts. I have a set of SS caps that were polished and they look every bit as good. I got them on ebay with the orginal paint. Had them polished, they even buffed the paint to make it shine and now I have a set of NOS looking caps. I think I may have $150 in the set with polishing.

All it takes is two bidders---How many times have we seen this sort of stuff at B-J, Christies, etc?

That's all a SELLER asks (dreams?) of!!

This will be a good one to watch. Seven people seem to make up the 40 or so bids on the caps. I have been known to pay a lot for a part I needed but this seems out of reason? I agree, the best buys are from HET members.
  • I started bidding early, no action for a while then some cautious bidding. My $110 max was hit and I dropped out. Then it really started to rock and roll! The only seemingly honest bidding I saw was the 51 grille pieces from Huddsywuddsy. I paid more than I should have, but the bits are perfect and well worth it to me. Other stuff seems to drift along reasonably until near closing time, then go crazy. It will have to be something I really want and cant find from a member before I jump in again.

Have a look at auctionstealer.com to see why some auctions go crazy at the last moment. There are other auction sniping tools out there also.
  • Oh, darn, I guess nobody on here won them.
  • From what I have seen on ebay, the people that bid crazy like that, have no knowledge of what they are buying. What is bad their friend, who doesnt know any more than them, tells the poor sap what a deal he is getting. I think that is one of the major reasons why these old cars & parts have went up in value so quickly. I wont pay them either, and I dont buy out of the club, unless I have to. Long live Dave Konstansik, and Timmy! lol
  • At $1700 for a set of NOS caps, it's time to reproduce them. I thought that $300-400 for a set of NOS was plenty, but man, that is insane.

Hmmmm. I have some NOS 35T hubcaps I've been meaning to put on ebay. Looks like I will be able to retire!

:eek:The auction had to be rigged. Look at the bid history. I buy less and less on ebay due to crazy bidders or sellers that have a hidden reserve. Hudson step down hubcaps are plentifull and many clean up nicely. Thses probably will be back on ebay at a later date.
