1940 hudson
I purchased a 1940 hudson three pass. coupe about 6 months ago. A really great car. I put over a thousand miles on it this summer going to car shows.
I was told that it was a rare auto. It has 88 thousand miles on it and the interier is still in good condition. it has a radio, heater and wind-up clock that all work. Not sure what has been done to the body other then a paint job. A very solid car. It has a jump seat in the back Can anyone tell me if there is a book anywere that gives the production numbers for 1940???. All I can find is that there was about 88 thousand total produced.
Also is there a way to tell if it is a 175 CI engine or a 212?? The s/n on the door post is4087179 but I can't find the number on the engine I looked were it was supposed to be (on the cylinder block between the #1 and #2 exhust manifold) ,It looks smooth as if it was never there. I would like to rebuild the engine but don't know which rebuild kit to buy.
I hope this makes since as being new to Hudson ,I may have a lot of questions as time goes by. My last old car was a 54 vette but in the short time I have had my Hudson I have done more with it and enjoyed it more then I did in the 6 years I had my vette. THANKS in advance for any help you can give me.

Hello,
Welcome to Hudson ownership. I do not want to 'steal others thunder' but you will find everything you need to know about your Hudson on this Site in a few days thanks to many members efforts at compiling records.
I personally can echo your comments about your Hudson garnishing more interest than a Corvette. I strongly recommend Joining the Hudson Essex Terraplane Club (www.hudsonclub.org) as another great resource.
The HET Club is one of the largest world wide Auto Clubs and publishes a bi-monthly colorful Magazine for members (White Triangle News) that has many Tech Tips, Feature stories, and a large Classified section. Currently the WTN editor, Sam Jackson, is offering a complementary WTN Magazine on another Thread in this Forum (Sam also owns a '40) Look for Free WTN Thread...

Production numbers for Hudsons are hard to come by because most records were destroyed when Hudson merged with Nash. I think the rebuild kit is the same for 175 and 212 engines because the difference between them is in the stroke (4 1/8 vs 5 inchs).0

The only difference in the engines are the crankshaft, rods, and cylinder head. You will have to get all the bearings re-metalled and machined if you are rebuilding the motor. Having never seen a '40 model I don't know what distinguishing marks would have identified the short stroke motor. Unfortunately the Master parts interchange book only gives the starting serial number of all "40" series cars. Perhaps there is a part number on the head? If so that should be a starting point.

Hi---I could be wrong, but because your serial number does not incorporate a letter along with the numbers in it, I believe it has a 3X5 engine.---Cliff Minard.0

No it is the other way around, if got a letter in the serial number, it has the 3x5 engine. I say this car originally had a 175, but who knows what its got now.0 -
Hudson40 ,
Go to page 3 (or 4) in this Forum to find 'Coolant Capacity' Thread. In the reply you will find a Link to Factory Records compiled & posted by Alex Burr that may answer some of your Hudson questions0 -
:Welcome to the forum and the gang.Lots of great people and information with tons of knowledge and encouragement.. If your '40 has an overdrive transmission, the engine should be a 212. Also there will be a letter along side the vin number if it is a 212. Hope this helps. Arnie

Welcome to wonderful world of Hudsoning! Don't know where all the '40 owners are at but they should chime in eventually to help you out.
The 175 c.i. motor in 1940 came in the Traveler model. If memory serves me well, the compression ratio of the Traveler motor is cast into the head. If it has 7.00 (or maybe 7.25) cast into it, then the motor MIGHT be a 175. Quite a few 212 owners have swapped their lower compression heads for these hi-comp heads. BTW the '39 112 had the 175 motor and it had '112' cast into the head.

Thanks for posting the picture,Sam. I tried but haven't figured out how to reduce the size so I can send it. Thanks for the compliments. Its amazing how many people don't know that it is a hudson or how many young-ins have never heard of hudson. Its not what I remember hudsons looking like when I was a kid. I remember the late 40's and 50's models. Thats why I grabbed the 40, a lot different then I had seen before. Had an uncle that swore that hudson was the only car made.
Sorry I can't get any pictures of the beach. Not much water in southern NM, but pretty nice weather

Sorry guys, I must be grtting old .I had a question to ask but forgot to ask it in my last post. I have a standard trany w/o overdrive. The rear seal is leaking pretty bad. I found a seal to replace it with and have dropped the driveshaft. There is a flange on the rear of the trany. If I take the bolt off ,will the flange pull out or is it attached to something inside the trany???
I don't want to get in over my head and wind up having to pull the whole thing. Thanks in advance for all your help. What a great bunch of guys and a whole wealth of information Best regards hudson400 -
Take the bolt out and the yoke will come out. Pry the old seal out and install the new one.0

Thanks Billy , First thing in the morning,I will have it done.
