1940-47 pickups
Just bought a basket case 1946 Hudson pickup and hauled it home this week. It is missing the rear fenders and running boards do you know if the pickup rear fenders and running boards interchange with any of the car models?. I am a member of the HET club and to date have only owned stepdowns.
Thanks

Hello,
The running boards are by themselfs. Recently I seen somone selling reproduction boards again but cant locate no w. Surely someone wll let you know. I had a pr made locally from a pattern that turned out real nice. Truck fenders have a spacer added to the car style fender but the wheel opening radius is much larger. Anything is possible but suggest watching WTN for a pr of 'truck' fenders. I also suggest contacting the advertisers listed in the new Members 'Products & Service' Section. Personally, I have purchased sheet metal from Stu Coleman, Glenn Johnson, and Al Saffrahn over time for my truck restorations.0 -
Glad to see another work on a pick-up. There are a bunch of us here. Rear fenders are different and I had bought a set of running boards from a guy up in Canada. I will look up his info. Or you can do a search for 'running borads' here. Bill Albright is another source. Also K-gap is the source for all your rubber and seals.0

1941 rear fenders will fit, but you need spacer. I purchased a set of running boards from Delton in CA for my 46 HPU. They worked great and did not need rubber mat, as he has them finished with rubber coating.
"...they are made out of 16 gage steel and look good.

The rear fenders of the 41-47 pickups where factory modified versions of the 41 passenger cars, with the full wheel radius opening. A filler panel added to adapt them to the flat sides of the bed, and the gas filler neck hole was added for the driver side. If you can scare up a pair if 41's you will save a lot of work reshaping, and flanging the openings of the 42-47 car fenders which did not have the full wheel radius opening. You will have to fabricate the filler panel and notch the mounting flange area at the rear portion of the fenders, since they do tuck under the bottom edge of the bed roughly 1 1/4" or so.
For reference the front fenders of the 42-47 pickups where the same as the cars, with the exception that the rear portion at the top of the runningbaord mount area was not recessed for the runningboard covers the cars used. This area on the car fenders is fairly easy to modify, and fabricate a patch panel over the recess.
I have fabricated these filler panels in the past for the 46 pickup I used to own. It just requires time, patience, and some skill with torch or mig welder. It is pretty much your only option, as you will find, good usable original truck rear fenders are either beyond repair, or non existent.
The running boards are the same as was used on the 41 long wheelbase cars, but did not use the stainless trim moldings between the ribs, and on the outer edge that the cars used.
Have attached a picture of my old truck from March/April 1984 WTN cover. Wish I still had it, though it did go to a good home.
Hope this is a help.

What I wuz trien to say waz... I love them fender skirts and was wondering where an industrious chap, such as myself... might pick up a pair???0 -
Actually, the early 40s long wheel base car running boards will fit the pickup, but they are even more scarce than the pickups so where are ya. Bite the bullet and buy repro's.
Hoopity, if you're that industrious, you should make a pair. You'll be an old man before you find them.0
