Hemi ina Hudson????
OK guys, this morning da hoopster dun went an lost ot all togheter. A recent visit to points unknown produced a rotted 57 Dodge D-50 2 dr hdtp. A complete, yet unrestorable car with the Dodge 354(?) HEMI/pushbuttyon TQ Flite....
The Hudson pick up has a 262 in it... I have recently acquired parts necessary to complete the project either stock, w/262... or with a period correct HemiHauler....
Thoughts, ideas, input accepted. I realize there ia a welth of information here, and the question opens me up. I have not taken torch top anything... yet...

id put the hemi in it. im pretty saur ethe dodge stuff is called the Red Ram hemi. nothing interchanges getween the different makes of hemi. the dodges are smaller in outside dimensions and c.i. the 354 i think is chrysler only, they are big. id liek to get a red ram for my coupe.0

there is a guy that posts here and on the H.A.M.B. and maybe on ol skool rodz forum that has a hemi in his hudson. i think he goes by the handle of dehudso? his is a stepdown though. the engines are pretty close in weight to a hudson 6, being shorter means you will have slightly better weight distribution and the firewall notch means you'll have plenty of room to work on your dizzy. though you may not be able to set it back as far as the 6 is.
being a 354 it means you got the big hemi, the dodge red ram is around 240ci? its early in the morning here and im just getting with it. again go to the H.A.M.B. and search hemi. you may have to join to search but its worth being a member just to read what they have up there, you just have to wade through a ton of "thats so cool" and "you're the man bro" posts to get to the good stuff, especially if it concerns hemis0 -
The trouble with putting a hemi in this truck, is that the hemi is a big wide engine and will clash with things in the engine compartment. The steering box for one.0

How "unrestorable" is the D-500 Dodge? That's a $50K - $100K car done right, which is a lot more than the Hudson will bring in any case.
Only Chrysler had the 354 Hemi, along with the 331 and the 392. Dodge and DeSoto had their own Hemis. There was never a Plymouth Hemi in the Fifties, BTW, in case you might be wondering.
How to positively ID a Mopar Hemi engine, plus their respective applications:

Having gone the hemi route back more years than I care to remember - putting a 241 small block into late 30's Dodge and Plymouth coupes for racing and general street raising hell - I would recommend one MAJOR consideration - if you go this route - FOR LORDS SAKE AND SAFETY, PUT DISC BRAKES IN THE THING!!! At least in the front.

I'm not a to smart when it comes to Mopar stuff but I think the idea is cool. I'm more along the line of a nice Corvette 327 with 3-2's, progressive linkage and the like. But, if you are going to be different (never heard that from my non-Hudson buds) Hemi is a fun word?0

The dodge should be a 325ci with 285hp. I'd grab the D500 and find a decent body to build a clone0

I am usuing the 9" ford rear disc on the front. Even with this being "a lot of work" I still think the HEMI is a fun approach to a FUN truck. I have never been one to "go with the flow" Life is too short and there are far too many folks that need a good pissing off today...
It looks like a manual rack and pinion would stack on the frame rail???
I would like to have a load of fun on this project, meet some neat people and learn a lot about mechanice ( I only been doing this since 1969, I hope to figgure it out soon) and learn alot about this period in automobile history. Guys like GlensGolden who know the ropes. Hudson Dave who has spee
nt hours on the phone with me...:rolleyes:0 -
All 57 Dodge v-8s were 325 CID engines. The hemis were Red Ram or Super Red Ram engines. All chry corp V-8s used the same basic block casting . Only diff was bore and stroke and what style heads were used, polysphere or hemi heads. The 354 engine was 56 Chrysler New Yorker and Imperial and 57 Windsors. I.D. is made by the engine number located just in front of the valley pan , valve chamber cover, . The no will have a prefix which is the car model it came out of. For 57 Dodges it will be ; D66 or D67-1,or D70-71 for the 245 hp engine. D67-2 for the 260hp eng. and D500 for the 285 or 310 hp engines. The 310 hp engines had 2 4bbl carbs.0

Heads from Chrysler do not interchange with the Dodge or DeSoto engines. The Poly heads WILL swap within the respectives lines with the Hemi; i.e. the Chrysler Poly heads can be used on the Chrysler Hemi engines, and vice versa. Pistons are different. Virtually nothing interchanges between brands.0

I'm the guy half baked is talking about.
You should go for it.
I have a DeSoto 341 in mine. It is hooked up to a 700R4 via a hotheads adapter. A stock shortened driveshaft is hooked up to a '52 dana 44. The major hurdles were the center pivot steering and the transmission crossmember. My dad and I heated and bent the arm on the center pivot steering to gain oil pan clearance. The stock transmission crossmember was notched for transmission pan clearance.0 -

"Hudson's" car is a stepdown which is totally different from your truck. So what he did will not apply to your truck.0
