54 Hornet Spring Problems.
Does anyone have any opinion on what to do about broken rear leaf springs. I have a 54 Hornet Sedan that has forth and fith leaf spring broken on both sides... There are different fixes....
1. Order from Kanter
does anyone have experience with their replacement springs ?
2. Take out the springs that I have and have them repaired by a reputable spring place ?
I'm interested in any and all feedback... thx

Any reputable spring shop should be able to to fix you up with new springs or better yet a new spring bundle. I'm sure someone has the specifications for the spring rates etc.

Does anyone know what the rear spring rates should be ?0

According to my 48-54 Master Parts catalog: Standard load and rate rear springs for 4sed-2sed-coupe, except 1c-2c-1d-2d-3d is 950-120
Standard load and rate on Cv-Bro-Hollywood is 1000-120
This is straight out of the book.

Does Anyone Have Any Opinion About Kanter Replacement Springs ?0

My experience is that they will most likely cost you twice what anyone else would charge.0

I just got Kanter leafs springs for my 59 Merc, I was impressed (for a change) as they were a very good reproduction. We have 2 local shops in Salt Lake that build leaf spring sets. One shop is alot cheaper, but I've found over time one side always sags a bit and the size and shape isn't right, often leading to shackle and fit frustrations. The other shop charges about what Kanter does and is of much better quality than our cheaper shop, however they have issues matching the slides and clamps and whatnot.
Pay a bit more, get a better replica from Kanter. It's better that your wallet lean than your rear end!

I have always bought used ones, never had a problem. (but I am also cheap) There are plenty of good used ones out there to buy. Hope this helps.0

Do by all means heed the advice of 28HUD, They'll tell you anything to get the order and your stuck with what you get. BEEN THERE/DONE THAT0

Hello,
I have handled that problem different ways, from just removing the broken leaf(s) from underneath the car, had replacement leafs made, then re-installed with a new center bolt, another removed the whole assy replaced the broken leaf, then re-arched all the leafs, and simply replaced the whole spring assy on another car..
It all depends on how heavy your loading your car. Most larger cities have a spring shop that will match and arch a new leaf. Triangle Spring is near us . www.Trianglegroup.com0 -
Can set you up with new leaf springs for $385 with shipping. Will need to know if you have a 7 or 8 leaf system
