Hello,
Regarding Hornet Motor Rebuilding; I have two sources to mention.
IRELAND Machine in Erie Pa (90 mi west of Buffalo Ny @814 453 4477) can rebuild or modify your Hornet Motor. Ireland's has rebuilt two 'modified' Hornet motors for me...
A source for a stock exchange rebuilt Hornet I see advertised is Tim Chenny/Dave Kostanek (150 mi west of Buffalo @ 440 994 9173)

I Would Contact Dave Kostansek In Williamsfield Ohio
440-293-4079
He Has Done A Lot Of Engine Rebuilds And He Also Has Rebult Water Pumps, Fuel, pumps As Well As Tune Up Parts In Stock And Hes A Good Guy Who Is A Hudson Guy And Has Been For Years If I Was Buying A Rebuilt Engine He Is Who I Would Get One From0 -
Your choices are many. You could also try Doug Wildrick in Indiana. Excellent shop. Smart guy. Has built over 40 stepdowns. They don't come back either. Just remember ,the quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten.0

PM me on this one; I have some news for you!
Make sure you get it in writing from any one that if the engine leaks from EITHER/both ends that the builder will remove the engine AT YOUR HOME as necessary to SEAL IT CORRECTLY.
I had a 308 engine built & the thing leaked oil out of both ends and has a terrible vibration; cost $7K and has been driven about 300 miles. Will be removed in the next few days and replaced with a LS1, 6.0L, 345hp, Chevy V8.
Get serious and you won't regret it!
BUILD a true "Sleeper", and be done with it, and maybe this gal will want to ride in your car too!!

I'm old, my 308 does not leak a bit after 12K miles and a top of the line rebuild here in Utah is less money than a Chevrolet V8, But I have to say--I am not sure that having this "chick" ride in my Hudson would be worth the cost or the headache--let alone having to tell my friends that I paid 7K for an engine or that I was driving with a Ho-Hum Chevrolet Belly-button power plant under my hood? Sorry for the cheep shot but T&A is not everything. Most girls are a dime a dozen but a good looking Hudson only comes by once in a life time.0

bet she never paid no 7 grand for those either0

FYI
Believe it or not a Hornet Motor rebuilt by any reputable Machine shop using todays technology along with the modern components available will last as long as any popular 'Big Three' Engines.
My experience having both a V8 powered Hudson Rod and a Hornet powered one is that more people at Cruisin's are drawn to my Hornet powered Rod because of its rarity.....0 -

Truer words couldn't be spoken!!! There is nothing wrong with wanting to make your vehicle fun, fast and dependible!! Being different is what the Hudson is all about-STOCK-or appearing to be stock.I must admit though,I have seen some gorgeous modified Hudsons!!!!! I like Ed Forresters,49 Coupe[this car appears to be ok to put back to a stock Hudson at some point],and the super modified stepdown that was at the Nats in Orlando-2000,was really cool. Then look at some of the other stuff that is being modified-Hudson powered-Rudy Bennett,Dany Spring,Randy Maas, and so many,etc... I think the 36-37 Terraplane coupe that was at the Nats.in Auburn this year with the turboed 308 tucked in under the hood was very cool.I am prejudice when it comes to keeping it Hudson powered,BUT look at the crowds of people when you are at a carshow, and you open the hood and they see it DOESN'T have a B3 engine in it.The people always ask more questions!!!= More Hudson exposure ****:D0 -
My rebuilt 308 doesn't leak from the ends. It leaks from its oil sender unit, but not the crank seals.
The more I drive the '49 Hudson and enjoy the torque of a fresh 308, the more convinced I am. Even with a 3.07 rear gear on a straight 3 speed, I don't have to downshift to pass anybody. Buddy, that's power - and its relatively stock if you don't count the headers and 4 barrel. Add to that I'm getting around 20 mpg - it beats my '05 Chevy V6 truck on milage too.
I'm so fond of these engines, I can't say enough.
Won't be any engine in My Hudsons, but Hudsons.

Mark, I could not have said it better!
These 308 Hudsons rock. I havn't had a engine as impressive as
this in my life. They have so many cool designed in features it
makes me wonder what the OHV version that was on the drawing
board would have been like.
I don't get the mileage you get with yours but the "Grin Factor" is
thru the roof.
Funny if I run the crap out of mine at the drag strip, and by that I mean
20 passes in one day it also leaks from the oil sender on the passenger
side of the block. To me it's just one sign that my HUDSON is marking its
territory, after all its the Big Bad A$$ Dog in my opinion!

Mine leaks from the front seal. Was the last place I expected a new engine to leak.0

Well Dang. You did get a new seal spacer, didn't you?
Other than your front seal, how pleased are you with the rest of it?
I never did hear how your combination came out, so I'm curious.

Bernie Siegried was one of the designers assigned to the follow on proto type. I saw the engine at Bernies shop many years ago. As you may know Bernie went to Ford from Hudson. The first engine he designed was the 300 Cu in overhead valve 6. This would have been the replacement engine for the 55 hudson... but as we know this was not to be.0 -

You can replace that oil sender unit with a Standard PS-15X or a NAPA OP6613.0
