Transmission Removal - Pacemaker

Is it possible to drop a transmission from a Pacemaker without pulling the floors out?

I found (by way of flushing the gear box) that I need to replace the seals of the input and output ends.

Also, who from the HET Club is a good source for the seals?

  • can't help you with seals, (part #'s ) right now, but I guess you could get the transmission out from underneath the car, I wouldn't try. I would think you will end up pulling it from the top, it is quite easy that way. Alignment is the difficult part, at least I thought. The floor pan comes out easy enough. Remove front seat bottom, front floor mat or carpet, unbolt pan. Not sure but you should be able to get the pan out without removing the seat frame. Oh, don't forget the gas pedal, and brake pedal, oh and the weather control unit.

Pacemaker500, I have had the tranny out of my Super Six 3 times and have installed an overdrive in it the last time. I really don't see any way to drop it out the bottom. The crossmember is welded to the side rails and I would not want to weaken the structure by removing it and bolting it back in. I admit it is a pain to remove it up through the floor, but that is the best way I can see. This is just my opinion, others may have better ideas. Richie.

The transmission will drop out from underneath, even with overdrive. You have to remove all that hinders it, like brake linkages and braces. I did this on my '50 P. However, it is so much easier to access the bell housing bolts etc, that it is much more practical to remove the floor. The assembly is incredibly heavy if it has overdrive, so you will need at least two men to lower it down. Preferably use a proper transmission jack, or like I did, an engine crane through the door opeing to hold it up and then lower it down.

  • Thanks, everybody. I know the book states pull the floor pans. But I thought I would take a chance and see if the wonderful D-I-Yers here had viable alternatives.

Looks like I got me a winter garage project.
