Question about a 1950 Pacemaker

I was reading a bunch of sites that had Hudson specs. And it seems to me that one statement leads me to believe that some of the 50 Pacemaker deluxe models (50A) had an option of a 262 engine instead of the 232. The next two paragraphs are what I'm talking about. Am I all wrong about this? Thanks for any information or opinions. Richie.

Both Pacemaker and the 1950 Super Six offered fastback four-door sedans, long-deck club coupe, and a convertible and fastback two-door sedan called Brougham. Pacemaker also listed a three-passenger coupe, the 1950 price-leader at $1807. Other standard Pacemakers cost under $2000 except the convertible ($2428).

A few dollars more bought a Pace*maker DeLuxe in the same body types save the long-deck coupe. These used the 262 Super Six engine, which was a bit more potent now at 123 bhp. Commodore Six and Eight deleted two-door sedans, Super Eight the convertible. The main appearance change from 1948-49 involved adding twin diagonal grille bars -- the make's traditional triangle motif.

  • someone told me that in 51, if you ordered a 51 pacemaker with hydramatic, it got you the 262, instead of the 232...

Makes sense because an old timer who was there in that period told me that he never knew Hudson to drill a 232 crank for the hydro...

Well the parts catalog does not list a 262 cid engine in the Pacemaker for 1950, but the 262 cid engine is listed as a option for 1951 - 1954 Pacemakers and Wasps. The parts catalog does list a 232 cid engine with a Hydramatic with and without power steering for 1954.

I guess that answers my question, thanks Mars55, Richie.
  • Mars, The one thing that you may or may not know about what Hudson listed and what they actually did produce can vary---widely. For years I thought the only hydraulically operated windows on stepdowns were on converts. Recently while talking to a man from Chicago who worked at a dealership , Hudson would build sedans and coupes with hydraulic windows. One 53 sedan was custom ordered with a 52 interior because the customer didn't like the checkerboard pattern 53's. A dealership could get you anything you wanted from Hudson as long as Hudson had it in stock. One guy ordered a 50 coupe with the color from a 39 that he was trading in. Parts catalogues are a great resource as a general rule but be aware there were a lot of factory mods. Hudson wanted to make customers happy and would do what it took to make a sale unlike the big three.

Hudzilla, I don't have the car yet but in the pics I can see the number 500 on the head next to the thermostat housing and it also says powerdome. When I get the car here(it is in route) I'll have engine numbers and such. Thanks for your reply. Richie.
  • Since the discussion is about a 1950 pacemaker coupe, here is what remained of my '50 after the May '03 F-3 tornado that hit my house and destroyed my shop. The shop wall (concrete block) collapsed on my '50 Pacemaker and an ,87 BMW 325iC ragtop, crushing both. The front sheetmetal on the Hudson got shoved over to the left a full twelve inches. The top and trunk damage are evident.

The car was one day from getting the 262 and 3-spd/OD installed that I pulled from a '50C6. Both cars are long gone now. These were my first two Hudsons.

66patrick66, that is a shame, I hate to see things like that. Richie.
