Exterior '36 Terraplane horns
Good morning fellows!
I am looking for a pair of the original-type exterior horns that bolt on to the headlights for my 36 'plane. I still have one, and it may be restorable but I am hoping to score the pair.
Does anyone know what years these were used besides '36?
Thanks millions, in advance, to a bunch of really decent, knowledgable guys who are going through destracting times right now.

Denver, do you have a pic of one?
My 36 doesn't have horns, parking lights etc.0 -
Denver,please post a picture. I may have one.0

Here's a shot of my car before I removed the horn on the right side.
Here's the look I'm after. Lol....gotta long ways to go.0 -
Unc, I ended up mounting the '37 Chev parking lites on my car to use as turn signals. It was not an easy decision to make, but came out well. The trade off was good bright signals. I can get a photo if you like.0

Here's a shot of my horn (in a coooold, dark garage).
It has a brass tag that says FA Premier, Chicago.
Here's what I did for turn signals. (It was hard to drill that hole)0 -
I seem to recall that the 1936 accessory horns were bracketed off the headlight buckets or stanchions, but it could have just been a dream. Just a word of warning: you might want to verify, upclose & personal, that your horn is the correct one for your car before spending a lot of time and money finding a mate! Maybe, for example, someone stuck an old Pierce-Arrow horn on yours, whereas a (somewhat more-available!) Ford horn would be a match! One never knows, does one...?
Anyway, the http://www.classicaccessories.org/ website offers hundreds of mixed-make accessories for sale from the 1930's through 40's, and I did spot a couple horns similar to the one you show. When you get there, check out the following classifications:
Late 20s-30s Ford, Buick, Chevy, Cad, and all make car accessories 5001-5084
Horns 3601-3632
I did see some fender lights that somewhat resembled those on Eldon's yellow '36 convertible (which you picture), but they're supposedly for a Packard:0 -
Denver, did you buy the coupe that was for sale in Missouri a while back? Sure looks like that same car!0

I have been looking for a set of horns for my 37 Terraplane. I think Jon B. is correct in the 36 uses a bracket of the headlight stanchion for mounting the horns were 37 used a fender mount. I have taken pictures of cars at the national meets with the horns and this seems to be the case . I looked at one car at the national last year and owner thought the horns were different I have the original Hudson monthly shop broch. and they are the same in looks 36 and 37 just the brackets were different. Some one on this forum had once said Bill A. in Calif. had brackets made up at one time? i have one horn but no bracket. Thanks Chuck G.0 -
Chuck, mine (a 36) were attached to the headlight pedestals. There are threaded holes in them. I made a bracket for the other side and put some old Ford horns on them, just to fill the holes. The brackets are not too hard to make if you had the pattern of the other side. We'll keep on looking...Thanks guys.
66, I don't think this is the same car. Don't know all of it's history, but it was originally a Colo car. Bought it up in the northern part of the state.
The way these get moved around, I guess you never know, though.0 -
Chuck, the 1937 horns would look like this:
with the exception of the bracket portion at left. The Hudson bracket is much simpler. It mounts to the fender. Bill Albright did make them, years ago, and maybe -- if there's a demand -- he could do a couple more.
The horns can be made up by Cecil Nuxoll who lives (I believe) in Washington state. He is rather elderly, so I don't know how much longer he'll be doing this. The horns are similar to those of many other cars, just the length of the trumpets is different in the Hudsons, I think.0 -
Thanks Jon the factory photos i have show both the long and short horns on a 1937 great info for everyone. This is how we find out things i do not know how to post pictures or i would . I suppose the factory just used what they had until they were gone. I dont think they were as picky as we are. I have a photo of a new Terraplane were the dealer took the licsense plate, bent a V in it and wired it across the front of the grille and said your good to go. the owner left it like that for years to come. Thanks Chuck G0

This is a factory photo out of the 1937 hudson service magizine, not a very good one but you can see the horns on this car. If you have the most recent automobile Collector magizine it shows a 1936 hudson with trumphet style horns I think either are ok. Also some nice 1936 Hudsons of club members.0 -
Well that did not workout. Anyway the latest issue of Collectible Automobile has a nice write-up on 1936-1940 Hudson. There are some great pictures of factory photos and some of club members cars. There are two photos of 1936 cars one with short horns and one car with trumphet style horns .0

Well I have one and it looks pretty good. The Ni plating is in pretty good shape, took a little polish to it and only some light polishing scratches here and there. probably good to use as it. Not rusty or corroded. It is a Terraplane horn, I got it from an old guy north Lancaster, PA a number of years ago that was letting his barn crumble down on top of a '37 T sedan, along with a number of other Hudson products, even a '40 pickup with a camper shell on the back. I heard from some members back then that he and his wife would go to the Hudson meets and drink up a storm and the air would be blue. Anyway, I got this horn with the idea that one day I would rod a '36 w/ the '55 308 that I have. Well one day maybe it will happen, but if someone needs this horn more than I do it is for sale. No idea what it is worth.0

Thanks for posting the picture. My son was home from college and i thought i would have him post a picture because i dont know how but i think the camera was not working. (thanks Denverslim for offering help) I need lessons to do it myself. I am not very computer smart as you might have noticed. Dan the picture of the horn i have is different dome shape than yours i am not sure what mine is off from so this is a education. My horn has a tag that says HA on it and thats it? Thanks guys Chuck G.0 -
This is getting really interesting.
Dan, this horn looks slightly different than mine. The bracket is definetly different and the mesh in front is different. My mesh is just 5 or 6 vertical bars. I believe that the dome on yours is flatter also.
Now I am beginning to wonder how many styles of horns there were...0
