Hudson clutch

Greetings all,

I just purchased a 1936 Terraplane and noticed the clutch doesn't seem to release enough to shift without grinding gears. It was reminicant of a 1937 Hudson eight I had several years ago. The seller told me it works better after it's warmed up.

Any feedback about adjustment would be helpful.

Also anyone out there have a hood ornament? I have the plastic center just need the wings.

Thanks, Ironman

Have you checked your clutch oil lately? If not, it would be wise to drain the clutch and add fresh oil. Also, if the clutch does not release, the corks may have bonded themselves to the flywheel. In this event, you can insert a solvent and then rotate the clutch for several days to assure that the solvent penetrates the corks. They will probably release "without surgery".

I don't know of anyone reproducing the wings on the hood ornament. Watch Ebay, and check with Hudson vendors who advertise in the White Triangle News.
  • Welcome Ironman. Good to see another "'36er" here.

Jon gave good clutch advice, I'm in the process of changing my clutch fluid also. It took me a while to get use to the clutch, at first I was scratching the gears almost everytime I shifted. I kept trying to double-clutch and was way slow with my timeing. Once I figgered it out though, I'm a gear-jammer! Lol.

Hello Ironmam, welcome. It is a very good idea to service the clutch to assure yourself that it has fluid in it,but the grinding is probably because it is NOT a syncromesh transmission. As Denverslim describes, learning to double-clutch is a necessity.Do you know how to do this?:)
  • Thanks to all for the tips, I'm going to try ceaning and adjusting the clutch disc with solvent and filll again with fresh Hudsonite. I've double clutched for years and know it's not that.

Also In need of original headlight reflectors and lenses.

This is a great site Thanks again,;)

I have the grinding in my 29 Hudson when I try to shift to quick and I do double clutch. If I slow down a little and let the engine R.P.M. slow it goes right in gear. Just something to try. Good Luck, Ron

I didn't see where ya had the right adjustment. You need about an inch of free play of the pedal at the top. Easy adjustment. Pull the pin in the linkage and rotate the adjustment. (put the pin back in, lol)

I also have a 36 and with practice you can time the shift so it doesn't crunch (most of the time.)

Also, the 36 has a single wing. I whittled one out of wood before I found this one at Bill Albright's Hudson Ranch. Thank's Bill!
  • Do those red cigar thingies light up ?
  • Nope, not on the '37s, either, but that would be cool!

Yeah, when the sun hits it!

Somebody before me did try to light it apparently 'cause they drilled a hole under the rear end of it. I suppose you could put a light in there. Not sure I'd want the thing lit at night, would be right in your eyes, and my night visions ain't what it used t'be ya know?

Ironman, for the headlights try Donald Axelrod of Massachusetts (Google him); he deals in pre-sealed beam headlights for old cars.

I bet a small LED could be slipped in there from the bottom side. Very small wires would be easily hidden.
  • thanks for the great photos uncle josh, I was looking all over to see what the original hood ornament looked like. Your car looks great!

I bought a two door sedan on ebay last week. I'm told it's the original color blue but I am not sure, it is pretty bright for a thirties car. I would like to see a paint chip to compare it to. In the adds I've seen there are some bright yellows and reds mine is also two tone with black fenders did hudson do that in 36?

    Ironman
  • I was gonna say yes, but i quess i cannot say it 100% maybe 99% thru out the years i have seen alot of cars 2 tone with black fenders so i think you could order that way .

I'm probably telling you something that you already know, but make sure that you don't have more than an inch [even less] of free pedal travel and also too much fluid will hinder disengagement of the clutch with pedal depressed.
