Seatbelts in 4dr. Hornet

I am getting ready to install seatbelts in my 52 sedan (front seat) and I am looking for some advice and/ or pictures on the best installation. I have installed seatbelts before, but never with the seat framework (pan) like in a Hudson. I used the search feature and found a similar question (posted by Dan) but didn't see an answer.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have the three point seatbelt installation started in my 52 sedan. If no one can post pictures as to what they have done, I will post pictures by the beginning of next week as to what I have completed.

You ask about the "pan", are your referring to the raised platform the seat tracks bolt to or the unibody's floor pan? I plan on bolting to the floor pan. Most good shoulder or lap belts should have a reinforcing plate to use with the bolts and nuts.
  • I agree, make sure that the belts are mounted on something that is reinforced. If you have to mount to the floor pan use 1/4 in piece of steel plate. weld or use several Large bolts ( 3/8 or bigger) to mount it to the floor, don't just bolt straight to the floor pan. Not Good!!

I inspect all of the saftey equipment in all of the race cars that race at our Speedway. ( Salem Speedway, Salem, IN)

Just thougth I give some advice, Thanks, Barry Smedley

    Thanks for the info.

I am going to bolt them to the floor of the car, with re-inforcing, but I was wondering where and how big did you make the cuts in the seat pan?

    Thanks, Terry
  • I would go maybe 3 to 4 inch square then overlap your plate a 1/2 to 1 inch if you can. Try (if you have room) to mount the belts as close as you can to the back of the front seat, if you had bucket seats which I know you probably don't you would want each belt parallel to each hip. I know this sounds like a lot of trouble, but if you are going to put them in might as well do it right.

    Good luck, Barry Smedley

Julianos is a company I think others have used before here's a link to their "How to" page that should offer some insights into installing 3pt belts system.

I've seen a guy locally who welded a shoulder belt to the door pilar for the front seat. He said he welded the contact point to a wire drilled a hole in the pilar and pulled it through and made the weld....then ground it flush for the body work. I just used lap belts all around in mine.

I guess I might be a bit lazy because when I installed the lap belts to my 52 sedan I drilled the belt holes from the inside of the car through the pan and then welded a four inch strip of 1/4 inch steel across the bottom of the pan (under the car) and ran the bolts through the steel brace. I ran some calucalations and decided this equaled a five to one safety factor that would restrain a 250 lb person in a head on accident with plenty of strength to spare.
  • Over at my site click on the link below. In our downloads section we have a complete guide to installing seatbelts in a Hudson with pictures. Provided by our resident fabrication wizard Ray Barker. Come on over you will need to signup to access the downloads.

I threaded the belts thru the cushions and thru the floor behind the pan at the rearmost adjustment.

When it comes to your safety and that of your passangers, do you really want to use seat belts, of dubious condition, from a junk yard? For safety's sake, please buy new.

I was just looking on SeatBeltsPlus.com and am trying to figure out what lengths to buy. 60 inches seems ample for the back seat of my Jet, but I'm wondering what length would work best for the front seats? Would I need to go up to 74 inches? I imagine 90 inches would be way too long.
  • The seatbelts I installed on my '50 Pacemaker Deluxe(!) last year were purchased from Kantor. They have a nice selection of different colors to match your upholstry. The belt sets come with large heavy three to four inch diameter washers that you bolt under the floor pans as I did. I simply ran the belts through the back of the front bench seat and lined them up with the steering wheel. Turned out pretty good and was comfortable using them enroute to and from Pontiac a few weeks ago.
  • I have tried to register , but the site tells me that it is incorect or invalid. Can you tell me what I am doing wrong ?

    Sarah,

You will probably need to take some measurements to determine how long the fixed side of the belt needs to be. Measure from where the attachment point will be on the floor and up through the seat (while you are sitting in the seat) to see where the end of the fixed side will be. You will want to take measurements with the seat all the way forward and all the way back. Use a cloth tape measure and have someone hold the end of the tape where the attachment point will be. If the fixed end is too long it will go all the way across your lap and into the latch and not be able to be tightened, likewise if the fixed end is too short it may not be long enough to make it from the attachment point up through the seat.

Julianos website shows the different fixed side lengths available http://www.julianos.com/lap_belts.html

Could have sworn I was a member of that site, but it may have expired since it's been a while since logging in. Will have to check the downloads out as soon as I get re-approved.

    Thanks for all the input!

I must have been thinking about HudsonCollector.com. So many websites, so little time.

The HudsonMotorCar.org gets a good review from me! :) I joined easily and was able to get the seatbelt info, which I found very thorough. Now to check out what else I've been missing out on.
