I6 with 270hp/275 torque swap out candidate

I bought this 2002 Trailblazer LT with the I6, 4.2L, 4L80E (4-spd tranny) & 3.42 dif, w/151K.

Bought it off ebay to haul my two Jets from the Mojave Desert, CA, back to Tn. I really like it; $5,500-a steal, seemingly. I may just keep this baby.

For those who might be interested in swapping in one of these engines from the junk yard.

Check this out:

"Power is important, but so is durability. Of the more than 800 test engines built, twenty-four Vortec 4200's were tested on the dynamometer and all of them met the 150,000-mile target. Five of the engines were kept on the dyno running at wide-open throttle (WOT) until they hit 300,000 miles - a test of astounding durability. They were all still running well!"

We have one of these in my wife's Buick Rainier. Really nice quiet engine. Also the newer ones are up to 290 HP. I have often thought this would be a good rod engine for narrow or older I6 powered vehicles. Beware though it is a drive by wire throttle system, so no throttle cable.
  • yeah, a lot of these newer engines are wire throttle. It makes me wonder how much work it is to install these in something old. A lot of fabricating?

I was driving home from work tonight, and saw the Crosley wagon thing sitting behind the Meineke shop (been there for several years) I thought, how cool it would be to tub and rod something like that. It is just a shell, and if you could find a narrow front clip, and adapt something 4 cylinder, maybe with a turbo, you could have a mean little street machine. It wold be neat, but honestly, I would rather do a jet.

    Dan:

    This is info from an e-mail I rec'd from GRW at fuelinjectionconnection.com. He's referring to the 06 & 05 LS1 engines (435 hp) I bought, both "drive-by-wire" types.

It sounds like a good engine to work with. I would get all of the pieces that you need to make it work in the form that it came in, I know it sucks but I would find an accelerator pedal that you need and do the drive-by-wire.

If you are set on the drive-by-cable idea, that isn't bad, but it may take more than is realize. You would need a throttle body, a computer change, a harness change. The harness that we have would work for the cable and then we could also get you the computer and tuning to make your engine run. $445 for harness, $45 for 4L60 if you have that, Computer $125, and flashing the computer $125,

    I hope this helps

    1. So, I suggest that you look for a rolled-over vehicle or otherwise wrecked; buy it complete and disassemble it and you have everything to transfer over.

    2. Concerning hp boost; the main design engineer on this engine said to get 30 more hp (300 hp) immediately, simply run headers or split the exhaust and run some mufflers to reduce the back-pressure.

Gotta cut loose; busier than a "one-armed, wall paper hanger"!

I work for Isuzu which basically carries the same rebadged vehicle called the Ascender. Though I am on the commercial truck side of the company and am not up on all the details, there has been numerous bottom end problems on these engines concering crank and rod bearings.

I checked the code closely on my 2002 LT Trailblazer and the tranny is 4L80E, from the factory.

    54 HSWH,

You can verify what trans you have by the trans pan shape. Scroll down the following page and there is an illustration with model numbers:
