1950 Radio Delete

I was reading the FM Radio Conversion thread and it got me thinking what I want to do to the 50, The radio doesn't work and is emitting some neat looking probably toxic goo out the front.

I am undecided whether to convert this car to 12v since I don't plan on adding air, or any other modern electricals to this one.

Honestly though, I want to drive this car and feel it and hear it while I am doing so without music. I think I'll just by a Satellite enabled boombox and throw it on the seat.

Maybe it's because I haven't got to drive one yet - let alone one that is nearly original, but I can imagine crusing backroads in complete silence other than the wind coming thru the open cowl vent and windows and then kicking up the Twin-H :cool:

So to help me complete this dream I need to find a radio delete plate for the 50. Did they have different dash trim options based on the model for 50 or can I just look for a standard radio delete plate?

    I have a radio delete plate but I'm not sure what year it is. It is a piece of chromed steel about 3" by 9" with "Hudson" printed across the top. It has some dings and pitting.



    I can take a pic if you want.

    Oh, and it's cheap. If you can use it, you can have it for shipping.

    Dan, I know what You mean, My '54 Hornet's radio quit about a year ago and I haven't missed it at all. Not much worth listening to anyway. The radio in my Grand Cherokee hasn't worked in 5 years.

    The truth is you won't be hearing all that much wind noise when your driving down the highway. If you drive a stepdown which has all of it's weather stripping in place at highway speed with all of the windows down and all of the vent windows open you'll be amazed at how quiet it is. The low drag coefficient that was designed into these cars was far ahead of it's time. You can drive along at sixty miles an hour and hold a conversation in a normal voice.

    Actually Nick those were used in the 51 models as well. They look great when attached to a roll around tool box as well.

    Nick, the 3X9 you describe sounds very much like the one that came in my Hudson. I like the look of it. I have a cassette player equipped with the MP3, but I seldom listen to it. I also have a plug-in for my CB unit so we can shoot the crap while we cruize....

    A "Radio Delete Plate" is the cover or part of the dash that fills in the hole in the dash where the radio would go if one was installed.

    Was the delete plate standard and the radio extra or vice versa? I can't remember radios in my Dads cars but I don't remember a plate where the radio went either. At any rate now I know what the radio delete plate is, I was too embarrassed to ask for the last year. Seemed like a dumb question. It was but at least it's answered. It does sound like something that was put in after a radio was removed though.

    The delete plate was standard, and a rare standard option the newer the car gets. My first brand new car was a '94 Chevy Cavalier that was radio delete. The hole for the radio was filled in by a blank piece of plastic (lightly glued in). I still have the plastic piece, just in case I restore a Cavalier down the road LOL.
