I need to repair a section of the door skin on my 34 Hudson Terraplane Coupe and was wondering what type of sheet metal I should use for this patch. Thanks, Walt

You should measure the thickness of the existing door skin and match that. I think it will be 1020-19gauge CRS. I am guessing you have to fix the rust on the bottom of a door skin? If so, I have done something like that. If you would like to see pictures of how I did it, I would be glad to show you.

Okay, but now I have to find the "how to post pics" thread. Is it the rust in the bottom of the door that you are trying to fix? If so, is it the inner structure too?

I have a 3 inch hole in the middle of the door and I may redo the bottom where there is some wave in the sheet metal caused by the previous owners repair. There is no inner door damage.

If you go to the Hudson Hot Rod Forum and to the post "Finally got the 34 blasted and back", there are some pictures posted. I will also be repairing the rear passenger quarter panel.

Well, I got a problem. The 34' pics were done before I went digital. I'm working on getting them on a disk. For now, I can show you the same thing on a 46' Hudson truck. Sorry about the picture quality, I'm not very good with the camera as you can see. Sorry about that. I also noticed that the rear fenders on your 34' look a bit thin where they mount to the body. The one I did was like that too. So, I remade about a three inch strip the length of the fender and replaced that part. It's really the only thing you can do in that situation because the metal there has gotten so thin you can't weld it right. Just have to re-do the whole length.

Without seeing your car I don't know if you have to remake the door bottoms or if they can be metal finishind. I am surprised that none of the inner structure rusted through. If the outside needed to be replaced like that I would think the inside would be almost as bad if not worse.

Anyhow, you got an awesome car there and it looks like you got good momentum to finish it. Wish the one I did was a coupe but it was a four door. I like your better.:)

Ahh, got the last two photos out of order, but you get the idea.
  • Those pictures of a patch panel you have discribed as a 1946 Hudson Pick up? I didn't know Hudson made a four door truck. It doesn't look like any Hudson truck I have ever seen. Am I missing something?

Looks like the drivers door on regular pickup to me.

Your right! It's not like any truck Hudson made. It's an extra cab truck, not a full sized extra door. More like a half door like the new trucks are today. In the third picture down you can see there is a front door, then a half door, then the back of the cab. Good eye, I think most people didn't notice.:)
  • I knew it was not a regular pick up truck! How about some pictures from back a little more so we can see what it looks like.

Hi Roy! (Nice choice of name by the way) This truck was built for a friend of mine and he has asked me to not post any photos of the truck until he has taken it to a Hudson meet. He says it will be at the next San Simeon meet in California. I hope so. It is a BIG build and he has himself done sooo much to this truck that it's going to really be something special when it's done. I don't want to spoil the surprise of it's first meet. I only posted these photos because it might help someone else in fixing their rust problem and nobody can really see what the truck looks like. Believe me,....I would LOVE to post pics of it! It's a *****en truck!
