Where to get a Battery. Temp Gauge Question.
This is for a 1949 Super 6.
Am having difficulty finding the correct size 6 volt battery. Most are to small for the battery holder. Does anyone know where to get the correct size? Part Number?
I know the temp gauge goes to hot when the key is turned off but when the key is turned on should it go down to cold? The gauge in this car starts out hot then moves towards cold after about 10 min of running? Switching wires on back of gauge doesn't change anything.
Thanks

Hi Russ,
You can get a battery at Sears, NAPA or any of the antique car battery dealers that advertise in hemmings. You're looking for a Group 2 battery with at least 600CCA's0 -
Not sure whether you take a Group 2 or Group 2-L. GROUP 2: 10.25" LONG, 6.75" WIDE, 9" HIGH. GROUP 2-L: 10.25" LONG, 6.75" WIDE, 8" HIGH. Both are six volts.
Antique Auto Battery offers a Group 2 with 780 cold cranking amps, tel. 800- 426-7580.
Deka battery is made by East Penn Mfg. Co, offers Group 2 battery at 780 CCA. Tel. 610-682-6361 for nearest dealer.
Delco offset Group 2, 550 CCA, call 800-ACDELCO for nearest dealer.
NAPA carries a Group 2 with 625 CCA.
Interstate offers Group 2, 600 CCA, call 800-872-4100.
New Castle Battery offers Group 2, 700 CCA, also a 2LF (same as group 2L) with 550 CCA, has 'Ford' script on battery. Phone 800-622-6733 for dealer.
Optima battery offers Group 2, 850 CCA, this is a modern looking battery, much narrower than the standard group 2 so you will have to brace it within your battery tray. Available at Pep Boys, Advanced Auto Parts or any Interstate dealer. Dealer info: 888-8OPTIMA
Tractor Supply Company offers an inexpensive Group 2 battery, 625 CCA, won't last as long as the others but cheap, phone 615-366-4600 for locations.0 -
Temp Gauge on 49 should return to cold slowly (about 30 seconds). It should do this with the motor off and the ignition on.
Also, correct size fro your battery is Group 2. The Group 2l is used in many cars including the 41- 47 Hudson.

Hi Russ,
I just wanted to remind you that the 1949 Nash was Positive ground, and that this might be responsible for your temp guage working backwards, if you installed a new battery with the negative terminal grounded. It will also make your fuel guage work backwards. If you have not had it installed for very long or driven very far, you probably did not damage anything, but you may want to invert the battery and be sure that the generator is properly polarized for positive ground.

Couple of things. One he posted this question 5 years ago so he is probably good for the answer and his car is a 49 Hudson Super Six not a Nash.
Other than that welcome to the Hudson section of Classic Car.0 -
Chas, the behavior of the temp gauge is independent of the electrical system polarity. Actually the coil and maybe some radios are the only things on these cars that are polarity sensitive. The temp gauge behavior is what it is because King-Seely, the gauge provider, used a sender unit whose resistance increases with temp rather than decreases.0

Hi Park,
You are obviously correct, and I apologize for the oversight, and for not realizing that the question was posted four years ago. I was just excited to see the exact problem whcich I had with my Nash fuel guage, and thought that it might also apply to the temp guage. My Nash was sold to me with the battery installed backwards, and it took a bit of research to learn that in 1949, the cars were still positive ground, so that was a revelation for me.
Thanks for the clarification on the King Seely guage set up.
