Unbelievable. I was livid when I saw this.

Another attempt at design by someone who probably didn't graduate from design school!0

I think I remember this car for sale before. The sad thing is that this is as finished as this will ever get. Lots of folks talk about chopping a Jet, but I've never seen a drivable one.0
-
Too bad, really. I think Ed Souers has already acquired a parts car for his "topless" project...0
-
I remember this car also. Too bad.
I would like to see someone pull off a nicely done chop. I always the liked the vert prototype.0 -
Sarah - I woudn't get too upset - I doubt this one was much to start with based on the rust in the pictures. But - do be upset because it's just plain fugly
I hate to sound so critical but...Poor quality, poor vision (design), poor execution. Too much of a chop without altering the belt line of the car as well.0 -
Forget the total crappy job for a second and look at the lines of the car with the lower roof line. Kind of gives you an idea of what Frank Spring was trying to do before they butchered his design in the body engineering. Section that body and harmonize the proportions and you would have a really nice design.0
-
Yeah, the damage was done on this one from other brother derrill a long time ago. Just kleenin up out by the double wide....:D0

It sort of has the look of a 54 Brougham to it. The rear windows have to go though.0 -

Where did y'all get that thar pitcher of Jethro? Was he a modlin' for the new Better Trailers and Hemp Garden magazine? Yee Haw!0 -
That just goes to show you that you can chop any top and put in any size of an engine. Just think of this car as convertible potential?0
-
His designing looks as good as his "garage" Must have lost his tools in that mess, and can't "Gitter Done"! What a waste! I think if you restore the Jets back to the way they were, and do a halfway decent job they are a nice looking car. I get good comments on mine all the time. At least nobody hasn't said "That is a good looking Ford" for a while.

51HornetA,
You spotted the most obvious problem with the design (or lack of it) by the neophite bodyman. It is totally out of proportion. Here it is with a 3" section that brings everything into place design wise. Those "hoot owl" headlight buckets don't help either. This thing could be salvaged but OH My! That's a lot of work for someone. BTW, don't come down on this messenger, the dirty deed to this car has already been done.
Peace,
Chaz0 -
I know this isn't going to make me popular but here it goes anyway. I think the look improves the jet. I think the body needs to be channeled to bring it into proportion but the roofline makes the jet look much better. I am not capable of doing what the car needs but sectioning the body and putting in a real back window and that car would look like a 3/4 scale pacemaker.

I agree with you Harry. I think the concept to streamline this jet was an improvement over stock. Somewhere it went astray in the execution. From the pictures, it appears that it was a 4-door, or else there's shadows on the door and quarter from a reflection that make it look pieced together.0 -
I think the rear windows were made to shoot out of. It was gonna be a get-a-way car for the bank robbers in an upcoming Bat-man movie.0

Chaz,
you are right when you look from the back and the way the trunk could flow into the roof life as a single plane you see the possibilities. The story I have is that Spring's design was a lower car the body would have been sectioned as you show and the roof line would have flowed into the trunk smoothly. Spring went to Europe to spec out the body for the Italia while gone Barit and dealer Jim Moran saw the clay mockup they made design changes that were implemented by the body engineers not the designers. They raised the roof line (The famous Barit line about wearing a hat while driving) and then raised the belt line to try and re-proportion the car. Moron wanted it to look like the 52 Ford and in a way it looks like a smaller version and in fact they used a the same rear window as the window manufacturer gave them deal using the same design as Ford.
Sum total is a car that has too high a belt line and too high a roof line. I fully plan on getting a 4 dr Jet and sectioning the body and roof line to try and approximate the Spring design. (Oh the horror of me admitting this online,, and too a Hudson as well LOL) Over at my site Hollywood308 photoshopped a Jet to make it look better here it is what do you think. I like the look.

I think the roof could go a little lower but even a 2" sectioning of the body and lower the roof improves the flow.

Make sure to install a sunroof so you have a place to put your head. Jets are 62" tall for a reason.0 -
No problem I plan to rework the floor pans and seats as well. I have been in many a Jet. My friend has a 2dr with Twin H and that is a screamer. Well the way he drives it is.....0
-
What will you do with the floor pans?
The tall height problem arises from the lack of legroom in a short wheelbase 6 passenger car. I've read that the 54 had the backseat set back into the trunk 2 inches which would help. I suppose the firewall could be modified so that the footwells intrude into the engine compartment. In a stock Jet, the seats are chair high to make up for the short wheelbase. You could get rid of the chair high seats, but you'll have to have little bitty legs to be able to drive it.0 -
The thing that makes the Jet a butt-ugly car is the height of everything. Chop the car as the 'shopped red car shows, and lower the interior floors to accomodate people comfortably, and it would be a very nice-looking car, like a '54 Hornet is. That's the only thing that would make a Jet attractive.0

If I were to replace my "chair high" seats, I'd need "high chair" seats to be able to see over the wheel. Perhaps being vertically challenged is why a Jet suits me so well.0 -
Just to follow up on this chopped Jet, it ended up selling on eBay back in January for right around $660...
It's now for sale on Craigslist in MO at an asking price of $4000, reduced from $4500! I needed a good laugh... Here's the link...
