Oh boy, it hauls Hash
Well, ever since I got this car on the road I've been dealing with a lack of power, specially on hills. On the flats the car ran fine but put it under a load and it just didn't do it. Today I jumped on the freeway and ran smack into a three mile grade. It was terrible, I couldn't get over 40mph, I finally reached the crest and the car took off but it was embarrassing and dangerous. So I got where I was going and popped off the air filter and lo and behold the chokes weren't open all the way. So I took a screw driver and adjusted the butterflies on both to full open and ta da, the Hash now runs like the proverbial striped assed ape. Freeway speeds up and down grades no problems. How is it I can miss the simplest things and over analyze problems to death. The chokes still don't work but at least they are open all the way, and the Hash moves on down the road. Thanks to all who have helped me get to this point, now on to the suspension.

Mac, how true, all the times I looked down those throats for a problem I was looking right past the problem. Number 1 rule is it takes air and gas to go fast, restrict either and you have a problem.

Steve, this is why I wanted a car I could work on myself. It has gotten where today there isn't too much I can do on my own vehicles as far as tuning or mechanical work just from all the electronics. In the sixties this would have been a duh problem, I would have taken off the aircleaner, seen the problem immediately and been on my way. All this stuff I knew is coming back, it's just taking it's own good sweet time to get back into the ol grey matter where I can use it. If I would have spent this much time fixing such a simple problem when my dad had his garage he would knocked me upside the head.

Paul, it is a comfortable ride. I will feel better once I rebuild the front end and replace the shocks all the way around. The funny thing is the shocks don't feel bad and they are banging like the seals are worn out. Did you happen to find the numbers for the front shocks? How about ball joints and the like, are they still easy to come by? It seems most of what I need a real parts store will have, not the Autozone but my Parts Plus or Napa stores can find me most of what I need if I have numbers.

Walt Mordenti here. you have to remove the carburetor and clean out the air passage that draws the hot air to open the choke fully. Front end parts contact this fellow, he's an AMC parts dealer.

Walt, thank you. I think the hot air passages are open. I blew through them when I boiled out the carbs and checked all the air passages. Everything seemed to flow easily but now I'll check them again, just to make sure, as we all now know, I can miss the simple things. Also, thanks for the parts contact, that should make the job much easier.
