Master Cylinder cover

What have you all got on your stepdowns to cover the master cylinder. I have the plate with three screws securing it to the floor. I the HAD a plate with a single screw that was carpeted that secured over that. It was lost when I had the car recarpeted and didn't realize it until I went to check the fluid. I now have a big hole cut in my carpet so I contacted Lance ( Hudzilla) for another plate. He said he had never seen one. I was most sure this was a factory part and gave you nice covered access to the cylinder. What do you others have? Could this be a 54 only thing?

Most stepdowns had a rubber floor mat and you just lifted the corner of the mat to gain access. The ones I have carpeted, I left the drivers rear corner un attached so i could get to the above referenced three screw cover. The 54's with PB didn't need an access since the MC is under the hood. Hope that helps. Dave W(FL)

How big was the single screw? Did the plate look like it might have been chrome underneath the carpet? I think some one made a home made after market plate and it may have been a commercial plumbing item, the size would have been about right.

At the national in Auburn there was a vendor selling a master cylinder lid that had a tube that went up the firewall allowing you to check and fill the master cylinder from under the hood. Since I have a Hydramatic, and have to take the rug out anyway to check both fluids I did not stop and look the filler tube and cap closely.

Does anyone know who this is? I am now beginning to reconsider the modification.

That was Erwin Sanchez-Flores from the Red River Chapter in La.

YEP! my 51 Pacemaker has a three screw cover also. I check my fluid level from underneath. I take aff the master cylinder top, use a mirror (o my finger to check level and if needed use a syringe with a lenth of hose to fill the master. Over the twenty years I have had the car I have

needed to add only a small amount of fluid . Fortunatel the system has stayed leak free.

When I did the brakes in 1985 for the previous owner, I switched to silicone brake fluid.

Stepdowns had floormats, I thought they were all carpet. I believe they all have the plate with the three screws, it is above that was my question. I swore that carpeted cover was a factory piece, but when Lance questioned it I got wondering. Sounds like it must have been custom. I guess I will make another as I liked it.

After you make it post some pictures. I still have to put carpet in mine and this could be an alternative to pulling the rug to check both the trans fluid and the brake fluid.
