I finally Got my 50 Pacemaker today.
Hi everyone, well I got my 50 two door Pacemaker Deluxe Brougham today and have several questions to ask if you don't mind. The vin # is 50A87944, I looked for the engine number in the same place that the 49 SS had its engine number. It is not there, I looked all over the engine and can't find an engine number. There is a flat machined area on the front of the block on the passenger side but no number. The head has a big "500" on it and says power dome and has a casting #303001. It also has a two bbl carb, I thought all the Pacemakers had single bbl carbs. The car is stick with overdrive, if that is any help in identifying the engine. I will post some pics tomorrow. Thank you all in advance, Richie.

It would appear that the engine was changed at some time during its life, and if it has a 2 bbl carb, it probably is a 262 engine - the "500" pacemaker head would fit on the narrow block 262 with no problem. I think you probably have a "1950 Wasp"!

Jerry, how can I tell for sure? The glovebox says Pacemaker, that is the only place I see a model name. The engine was rebuilt in 1978 and has 12,000 miles on it. It has a chrome steering column, which I hadn't seen before. It runs good, much faster than the 49 SS. Richie0

With no number at all on the block, you likely have a warranty replacement engine.0

Thanks 66patrick66, I believe you are right. Richie.0

Richie - the only indication that the engine could be a 262 would be the fact that it has the 2 bbl carb & manifold. The chrome steering column was not part of the 50A package - someone must have made a change in the column. You say is is faster than the Super Six, that also would indicate that the engine is the 262, since the Pacemaker is a considerably lighter car.

Thanks Jerry, I just posted some pics. I just wanted to know what the engine was for the purpose of buying parts and stuff. Richie.0

Think the steering colum is off a '54 ... Most Pacemakers only had a Hudson badge on the trunk nothing on the outside that said Pacemaker. looks like somone already added parts from other Hudson cars. Should be a fun car to roll in. I drove my brougham everywhere.0

Aaron D. the trunk says Hudson with a red back ground in the handle assembly. There are two chrome spears on the front fenders that say Hudson, other than Pacemaker on the glovebox that is all. Richie.0

Richie:
The car is a "composite" A previous owner has take the liberty of putting those things into the car that they wanted. The steering wheel and horn ring are from a 54 Hudson. The Chome column cover is either a short hood item that has been chromed or the tube is a cut down version from one of the higher quality cars. In an original 50 the tube is painted and the wheel even if deluxe is of the 50-53 style with either two or three spokes. The major benefit is installing this type of column is the two lever transmission shift rods. I suspect that the transmission in your car is a 2 lever?
The engine is NOT a narrow block engine. The head is from a narrow block engine. If the reinforcement rib is missing the engine is a wide block that could be either 232 or 262 depending on the installed crank.
The 2BBL intake is not normally found on a 50 Pacemaker, BUT was available at the dealer for any 50 Models. If the intake is aluminum ... it is from one of the earlier narrow block 262 engines.
While the dash and interior appear nicely completed the colors and finishes are not standard. A 50 Pacemaker was very plain indeed. I know, as I have owned 3 4door sedans and one convertible.
Hope this helps... welcome to Hudsoning... and good luck with your car.0 -

Ken, thanks for that info. The tranny is still single lever with the cable coming out if the steering column. The intake is cast iron. I'll learn more about this as time goes on, I like researching and learning new Hudson things. Thanks again, Richie.0
