Mr. Ufheil-

Mr. Ken Cates recommended I contact you concerning some work we are doing on our '52 Hornet. "Doc" is scheduled to go into the shop on Sunday for the following work: Pos. ground to Neg. ground, 12V conversion, new wiring throughout, addition of alternator, Vintage Aire Heat/AC, and the addition of an electric fan in front of the condensor to assist the mechanical one. We have acquired all the parts necessary with the exception of the brackets to mount the alternator and the compressor on the driver side of the 308 and the dual pulleys. Mr. Cates has sent me some pics of some brackets that you fabricated for him in the past. My question to you is do you have these available that I might purchase them, or if not, do you have detailed dimensions in which I could use to fabricate them ourselves? I would be happy to compensate you for any help you could offer. Also, I have been told in the past that dual pulleys from a '54 would work? Any light you could shed here would be helpful, also.

Thanks-

Russell Chilton

  • Mr. Ufheil:

I am converting my Hudson to a 12 volt system also. Do you have the mounting bracket available? I'm also looking for a dual groove pulley. Any hints on where to find one?

  • did you look at the date of the original message. I hope you possibly get a reply, but you dug this message up from over two years ago. Best of luck on the reply Tim. Hopefully someone will chime in and offer up some additional advice on the conversion, and possibly a source for the dual groove pulleys.

I've noted a few old threads being brought to life recently. Not that this is a bad thing, but probably confusing to many.

I have noticed on other forums (that also run the vBulletin software) that they have a more prominent thread start date display and also display a message onscreen to the responder that the thread is past a certain date.

I don't believe I've seen functionality like this here - but, then - I thought I was wrong once but, was mistaken! :D
  • on long standing forums it is a rather commopn occurence that new members float an old boat
  • Ken U is listed on my website as the source of alternator and AC brackets. At the time, Ken was cutting the brackets out and custom welding for Hudson Stepdowns. At this time I do not know if Ken is still offering these services. I have both brackets installed on my car and they work super.

Ken ... are you still making these brackets?

I think Joe Stinnett in Florida is making the brackets for the compressor, I don't have his contact info but he I believe he is a director of the club and should be in the directory.
  • Thanks for the information.

To whoever posted this, where did you find it? Probably a year and a half ago, Classiccar.com unceremoniously dumped me from the members list and, I thought, all my old posts were lost. Had to sign up like a new member all over again after losing 800 posts.

Regardless, I've been in CA the last few weeks and am just now getting caught up on recent posts. If there is still interest in AC and Heat-equipped Hudsons using modern components, I can help you. Been through all this with Doc and will be doing the same in the Convertible. E-mail me or send me a PM and will help guide you through the process with pics and info. Let me know.

    FYI

Believe it or not its not difficult to make your own brackets if you have a drill press, hacksaw, and the basic ability. I start with the OEM brackets that I get with the component (Alt/A/C Comp,PS Pump) then go to lowes buy few pcs of strap metal then adapt to Hudson. To align belts I use a pc of straight angle Iron.

To measure belts I warp a tape around the pulleys for measurement then buy a belt. The only obstical has been obtaining double pully. One car I had no room for dbl pully so operated all accessories from single to double above then piggyback to another accessory. Everything works fine...
  • Hey Russell!

Good to see your posts... super that you got to see Bill and visit the RANCH. I agree with your summary totally.

I finally got the AC kit for my car bought and it is in the trunk. The double pulleys are in place. Will be going to Sweet Heart and Orphans in two weeks... hope to see you there. Will only be there Saturday. CU then?

On April 4-5-6 there will be a big car show here in Austin. Headquarters at the Continental Club on South Congress Ave. On the 5th will be all Day at the Heritage Center Northwest Austin. Talked to Jim Petersen that he should show his 54, but doesn't want to drive IH-35. I have been asked by the Donut Club to enter, and I'm humpin to get it ready.

Will only be there on Sat the 5th. Can't drive at night. It won't look pretty but I'll be there

The Lone Star Roundup is always a big deal for my Dad, Brother and me. We make it every year. My Dad always drives his '32 Roadster and my brother is coming down from Indy this year in his '33 pu that he just got on the road. I probably won't be bringing a car this year, but will be there.
