Thanks also from Jethroe (my 46 hudson pickup). He now has a new (1/4 sawn white oak) bed and Stainless exhaust. Next is passenger car springs and shocks.

    FYI

I thought of removing a few spring leafs too but left them (just in case) I wanted to actually load something (someday) on my long oak floor..

I added 2" lowering blocks with a rear sway bar from a mid 80's Bronco(2) and radial tires though.

Rides nice and corners very well...

Ol racer, would you post a picture of the Bronco Sway-Bar ?

Sounds like what i need for my 46-4-door.

    Thanks Rudy

Gosh I would but I havent been successful at picture posting, I dont have a St Rod accessable now due to winter storage... however, I may have a Bronco sway bar out in my overhang area. If so I could email a pic.

It bolts on with a U Bolt, Brkt & bushings L & R side of the 3rd member, then the Bar runs forward about a foot with a Link going up each side. Only fabricating is to weld a brkt up top at the crossmember, forward of the gas tank keeping the Bars horizontal. I buy them for $20 - $25 and they fit like made for Hudson.

I have went around sharp freeway ramps as fast as traffic would bear without body roll just like the newer cars ahead of me...

Thanks Ol racer, for the info on Sway-Bar . I have been a step-down racer and driver starting back in 1959 and starting out in a 1954 Hornet then all other years including a 54 Hornet-Jet ( drag Racing)

And this 46 is new to me,it dont corner like the step-downs and lots of body Roll and Sway. It has the Pan Hard Rod in rear so We will install the S-Bar with Your Help

Just installed a Mopar Diff with 355 Ratio and now the Turbo comes in at 15 MPH instead of 35 as was with the 276 diff that it had, That 262 comes out of the hole with A blast but runs out of steam on top end. (now it needs a Over-Drive ) Always something else when you start with MODS. The Turbo makes it fun to drive now and you know what it feels like when the Pressure comes in as you run a Blower on you 308.

    Rudy,

Seen your Turbo Set-up browsing thru many old pages when joined this Forum.. Was very impressed with your workmanship, and pleasantly surprised to see someone else with the creativity to try something different. Actually there are many others here that make me feel better about spending all my time on Hudson's while everyone around me is rodding the big 3.

I built a Chevy powered '47 Hudson trk with all GM drivetrain to fit in but it was too EZ I didnt feel challenged so I built the '37 Terra. The Eaton Blower was just an after thought. It was a lot of fab & shoehorn work but In hindsight I should have installed a larger Unit for the 329 mtr. I added NOS to compensate. I have some bumpsteer to work out before

    Hi Rudy,

Seen your Turbo Set-up browsing thru many old pages when first joined this Forum.. Was very impressed with your workmanship, and pleasantly surprised to see someone else with the ingenuity to try something different. Liked your drag Pic's in the WTN... I am glad to learn there are so many others like us which makes me feel better about spending all of my time on Hudson's while everyone else (around here anyway) is rodding the big 3.

I built a Chevy powered '47 Hudson trk with all GM drivetrain first but it was just too EZ ...I didnt feel challenged so I built the '37 cpe. Both took yrs part time. The Eaton Blower was just an after thought. It was a lot of fab & shoehorn work, and In hindsight I should have installed a larger Eaton for the 329" mtr. I added NOS to compensate but have some bumpsteer to work out before any high speed runs. I use a Ford 9" 2.79 posi with tall Tires.

The Terraplane suprisingly (to me) garners more attention at Cruise-In's than my Chevy powered trk and my friends big 3 Rods.... Guess they dont expect to see a Hornet 6 in there leading to telling onlookers the Hornet racing legacy over & over but love it....

We actually parallel our racing resume. I (street) drag raced since '57 until a strip opened in '59 then started racing Hudson stock cars on Sat nites and drags on Sun... 212's at first, stock Hornets, (get this using 2 & 4rd Sdn's b/cause couldnt find any cpes against v8's with cpe bodies), then raced Modified Hornets, evolving into a long super Late Model career. When quit I returned to where I began Hot Rodding Hudsons...

I have a '50 cp lightened, and all set up for drags waiting the modified Hornet motor. Send me pm or email if like know more. Chuck

Thanks Ol racer, I just sent you a PM.
  • Back to the original question. Rear shocks for a 46 4 door. Are the shocks for the truck the same as for a 4 door? How about a 2 door Sedan?

1947 Rear Shock Size - Car vs Truck

I slid under my Trk and '47 Parts car to measure difference this morning....

Truck at rest with no load 10 leaf springs the shocks measure 19" center to center.(this allowed jounce & rebound travel when I installed them)

the parts car (completely loaded to the roof with parts) at rest with 7 leaf springs sagging the rear shocks measure 17" center to center.

Both my Truck & Parts car have the same top (Bolts) & bottom (Studs on spring plate) shock mounts

The Shocks have 'round bushing hole" at each end for bolts. (I believe I had to remove the 'steel 1/2" insert' on the lower bushing to slide onto the larger Dia 9/16" Hudson Stud shock Mount)

Regal Ride # 92-539 shock can be converted to many other Brand's. I bought them at Sears on Sale $18 each

    Hope this helps...
