can anyone out there in hudsonland tell me the number of digits in a typical 1948 hudson vehicle identification number?

are there any letters that precede the digits?

are there any letters that follow the digits

are there any letters that are in the middle of the digits?

can anyone e-mail me an example number?

  • According to Alex Burr's Hudson Handbook, the number of digits will depend upon sequence of manufacture (car #120,000 will have more digits than car #1200, for example), but.... the first three digits identify the series of car made:

    #481 Super Six

    #482 Commodore Six

    #483 Super Eight

    #484 Commodore Eight

So, for example, if your car is #483140001, it is the 143,13990th car down the line in 1948 (the first car in the sequence was #101), and that it is a Super Eight.
  • What's that number again, Jon? On what planet did you learn to count? (Just getting even for that clutch fluid crack made several months ago.)
  • Oh drat! 139900, then! (What's a zero or two between friends?)

  • Alas! The Wise Shaman has been served a slice of humble pie!
  • 1937 Serial numbers don't go high enough to bother Jon B. LOL
