Hi Everyone! I'm hoping someone out ther can tell me what kind or weight of oil was used in the super sixes(1928). Dropped the pan and cleaned it out. Now I need to replace the oil with? Thanks to anyone who can help me. All I've gotten so far is (heavy oil). Phil.

I currently use 20W50 in my '28 Essex Super Six Coupe but one of my bearings is a bit suspect. I have previously used 15W40 or 20/40 weight.

Have you cleaned out both the upper & lower pans?
  • Dear Dave Y. Yes, I scrubbed the thing clean. It's pristeen. Geoff told me to drop it to inspect for acid holes but there were none. this motor was well cared for. I looked up into the block and was very surprised to see so little wear and how clean it was. I ponderd scraping some of the mild coatings but decided to leave it as is. (getting smart in my old age). I was told this engine was running fine when it was parked and it's obvious it will probably run fine again. Thanks so much for your input. This site rocks. Phil

Hi---I personnaly think that 20W/50 Is too thick for a splasher engine & would suggest a 10W/30 as a good alternate or even a straight 30 weight which is what I currently use in my splashers. Strongly considering 10W/30 though since straight 30 weight is getting hard to come by lately.---Cliff Minard.
  • A web search for--- Howes Oil Additives--- brings up a --how to choose your motor oil-- article I think is very informative. Even tho it comes up under the Howes additives search it says DO NOT use any additives . You still have to research the oil you are thinking of useing but it tells a lot about requirements and what to look for in chooseing the proper oil. BUD
