54 paint chips
Saw this on e-bay and the 6th color down in the first row looks to be that mysterious color I have on my car. I can't make out the name on it, even zooming in. My guess is copper something, any ideas?

Rob, those are not Hudson chips, just some random chips they used for the auction. Just a lazy seller. The closest 54 color to the sixth one down the first column would be Royal Red, to the seventh would be Roman bronze.0

Is your car close to this colour. I have seen this and another red that are not on any colour chips I have (I have all the factory chips) but I know it came out late 54.0

Perhaps:
1) A custom ordered color.
2) Original picture changed color with age.
3) The spectrum of sunlight was different soon after all the atomic bomb blasts.
4) We can't trust our computer monitors.0 -

It's like a dark salmon color. Closest I have seen is the corral red from the 55 Hudson chips. Hudzilla said it is entirely possible being a 54 Special that it could be an AMC color. I cleaned an area on the firewall and had a paint shop put a scanner on it and matched it. So I have the formula or at least in todays paints I do, but I still do not know for sure what it was called originally.0 -
There were two different post cards published with the Hornet Special Club Sedan pictured. One of them was in Lipstic Red, the other was in Roman Bronze. Both are kind of red colors, but the Roman Bonze was more orange than the other.

I agree. The other options make too much sense and aren't as funny.0

I went on the color library a while ago and printed up the 54 offerings. It is definately not lipstick red or roman bronze. That is where Hudzilla ( Lance) proposed I might check the 55 offerings as the Hornet Specials wre built so late in 54 that the car could easily have been painted an AMC color as they had merged by then and just wanted the stepdowns and Jets out no matter what. Another interesting point is that my car only says Special on the right fender. The left fender just says Hornet and there is no evidence that it ever had the Special badge on. I am convinced it is the original fender to, as you can see the original color bleeding through in many places which matches the rest of the car. I have been told that this is also entirely possible that they were short on parts but just wanted the cars out. My car is a weird dude, trust me.0

Since no 1954 Hudsons were produced in Kenosha, I can't see why AMC would ship paint to Detroit.0

Dave, 54 has always been a bit of a mystery to me. I have factory colour pics of a 54 Hornet Special sedan its painted blood red the kind of colour you see on the Ram pickups today. It does not exist as a colour on any of my chips. Its not Roman Bronze its not Toro Red its not lipstick red. Its a bright full red. And to back this up I know a guy who bought a 54 Hollywood late in 54 off the lot here and its painted this red. Came from the factory this way. When he repainted it he had to use a Chrysler red because he could not find any Hudson record of this colour.
I would toss out a speculation that late in the 54 run the factory ran out of paint supplies and they jobbed these colours from another source or indeed Kenosha said hang on we will send you supplies. I also have a factory pic of a 54 Hollywood painted a mustard colour I have not seen on any chips. I cannot speculate on that only to say they may have custom painted these for advertising as the colours really pop out.0 -

After 54 years, isn't it possible that the original lacquer has changed color?0

Never, impossible how dare you suggest such a possibility. Though you may have something there I recently painted my car using magic markers took 400 boxes and the colour does not really match the Hudson chips and to make matters worse I used washable the first time I drove in the rain I lost my new paint job.....0

Sean, Sean,
You have to use laundry markers. Can you send me some of the paint you whipped up in the kitchen? You know, the stuff that changes color with the seasons.0
