Drum Puller
Where would be a place to purchase a reasonably priced drum puller? I need to replace the wheel cylinders on my Hornet and fortunately for now I have a friend who has one in his shop but it was 500.00 from Snap On. I don't want to pay that kind of money for something I am not going to use much, but I think I should have one for routine checks of brakes.Any suggestions?

I found one at my local equipment rental place. I think it was about $30 for the day. Fit up just right, had the dog bone to hit to help pull the drum. You may want to check a place near you, or make a drive up to my area to rent it.0

Look in J.C. Whitney or Harbor Frieght catalogs or on their web sites . You dont use it every day so you dont need a $500.00 puller just one that works ok for your needs.0

There have been some threads on this, fairly recently- you need a "dog bone" puller- has a cross piece that looks like a dog bone that you can whack with a hammer to tighten the puller. If you just whack the end of the puller (like some of us are used to doing, to break the axle free from the drum), you apparently break something inaccessible and expensive in the differential. Someplace sells new ones at a fairly reasonable price, and the old thread has that info. (I just searched "brake drum puller" and came up with about 15 threads).0

Courtesy of Paul Schuster, here's the whole sequence on how to do it, with the correct puller shown.

How Snap-On can charge $500 for such an item, is beyond me. I think you can find them, new or used, for $50 or less. If the local rental place is charging $30, you'd do better to spend $50 for your own, because sure as shootin' you're gonna have to go back into those rear brakes sometime, then you'd have to drop ANOTHER $30 at the rental place! These are handly tools to have around.0 -
There are several on e-bay right now, I bought one for 55 dollars last year from e-bay. There is one on e-bay right now just like the one I bought, worked great. : 320215193437. Richie.0

I've heard of people making one from a Chrysler hub with the same bolt pattern using a large grade 8 bolt and nut in the center to push with.0
