alternator question

Hi all,

I am thinking about switching to a 12 volt alternator and I can see that mounting the alternator is no problem but what about the pulley? I would need to find a wide pulley to put on the alternator in order for the belt to fit. What have the rest of you done about this?

Jim, in the two cases I've experienced, I found the original gen pulley fit perfectly on the alternator (the typical Delco 10-SI series). The old gen pulley is a little bigger in diameter, so the alternator doesn't turn quite as fast as it would otherwise, resulting in limited charge capability at idle.

You can also use the original Hudson pulley if you carefully remove it from the generator. It will fit right up to the GM alternator.

    DUH.....what I meant to say was.....read Park's post above!

    Jim-

Park Waldrop is the man when it comes to conversions. He helped me through mine, although I simply used a one-wire aftermarket GM style alternator and used the pulley that came with it. Doc's lights are bright and have had no problems last 3 years.

  • Make it simple and get a 2 wire ALT. and the connector that goes with it. Post # 2 on the ALT. goes to your idiot light. Post # 1 is wired / conn. to the Batt. Post on the alt and conn. the wire from the Batt. terminal of the ALT. to the hot side of yhe starter switch. When you turn the ignition switch on 12V flows thru th idiot light and it glows. as soon as the Alt. starts turning and reaches 12V it cancels out the juice coming from the bulb, So the light goes out. USE your old pully. Shaft size is a SAE. thing and has been the same for years
  • When I changed My 54 coupe to 12 volt, I changed all the lightbulbs and took the alternator and voltage regulator off a 70 mustang that I was junking. Used the Mustang voltage regulator to replace the Hudson regulator and had no problems. Everything worked except the fuel gauge and it was bad. put in a ford unit and now it works too.
