  • Well, it depends on what you are shipping. I bought a restored '52 Hornet about a year ago and had it shipped to Texas from New Hampshire by DeMoise Trucking. Now this is enclosed transportation, which is the ONLY way to ship a valuable auto. Believe me, I did lots of research and checked out lots of transporters and got several quotes before I went with DeMoise. They were low to middle-of-the road with their bid compared to the larger shippers, but I cannot say enough about their proffesionalism, quality of equiptment and care of my "baby". They have shipped entire collections of Hudsons, and it shows. Besides, I like giving business to family run operations. If, on the other hand, you are shipping a "project", and cost is really important, I suppose an open carrier would be OK. Since my car was being shipped during hail season, open was not an option.
  • Make sure whoever you use is insured, and can show you their current insurance certificate to prove it. Long story short, I was burned by a large, well known shipper who has advertised in Hemmings every month for years. There was no question as to the damage to my vehicle as caused by his driver, he readily admitted it. It got really interesting when he told me an insurance company would not be handling the claim because his company was "self insured". He then proceeded to tell me he was sick of paying for that particular driver's mistakes, and if I wanted any money out of him I would have to sue him! I found out from my lawyer I would have to sue him in a New Jersey court, ( I'm in Michigan) and when everything was said and done I would probably be better off eating the damage than spending the time, money, and energy to sue this jerk. So that's what I did. Forewarned is Forearmed.

If you don't mind my asking, where is the car being shipped to and from? As others have suggested here, do your homework. Check the BBB for complaints against the shipper. Make sure you get everything spelled out in writing. Have the seller take date stamped pictures of the car (with the transporter in the background) to substantiate condition prior to shipping. Although the transport driver is supposed to do an inspection before loading, sometimes things get overlooked. Finally, don't shop soley by price.
  • I've had good service with Diamond B Services out of Wyoming.

Figger 'bout $1 a mile for the enclosed trucks.
  • I have had great luck with Diamond Express out of Colorado Springs, Co. They consistently beat the competition's rates and are very reliable. If you're interested, send me a pm or email and I'll give you their contact info.:)
  • I had a 1954 Hudson Hornet project shipped from upstate New York to Eugene, Oregon. This was an open shipment and the total cost was $1,500. The carrier was Boise Auto Transport and they did an okay job. You can go online to Bluestar Auto Movers, they are the broker, and they will match up a trucker with space available that is going from point A to point B.
  • Be very careful. I asked for proof of insurance...I got an insurance certificate with trucks listed...I used them. They damaged my car. Turns out the truck they used wasn't on the insurance certificate. Basically they had no insurance..for that truck.....it was a sham! They had 10 trucks...only 3 were insured. What a hassle...I was insured with Haggerty....They took care of everything. Being insured is the most important thing you can do. Then the insurance company will handle any problems & make you whole. No deductible! When I buy a car long distance, the first thing I do is insure it. That's your best protection! Haggerty is the best out there. Great rates & you can actually drive & use your car...very few restrictions.

If it's a nice car use Intercity. I've used them 3 or 4 times. Always professional service..always insured..no problems.
  • Good points about having insurance for the vehicle being transported. I bet that making sure the truck on which the car is tranported is insured is something many people would overlook.
  • I work at a trucking company that hauls vehicles. my best suggestion to all of you is to check to see if the company themselves is shipping the car or if the company is going to get someone else to carry the car. I am in charge of the auto transportation division at Road Scholar Transport, If anyone has any questions please feel free to give me a call 800-542-2301. Ask for Matt
