Hello Fellow Hudsonites,

I found an ad on Craigslist for a 1952 Hornet in the Columbus, Ohio area. Of the pictures that are there, the car looks to be complete. Does anyone know this car? I spoke to the spouse of the owner and she said that it is her husbands car and he is selling it due to health issues. I am considering purchasing it and would appreciate anyone's opinion who may know the car. What do you guys think should be offered for it. The wife stated that it hasn't been run in about 4 years and it has a broken rear window. Replacement is included with the sale.

Thanks guys...Glenn Degere

  • I seem to remember this car being for sale on eBay a while back. It looks like a pretty solid Twin-H car. I'd ask what they want for the car and go from there.

Putting a price on it from the photos is really tough but here are some starting points from Old Cars Price Guide. # 6 Condition $764; #5 Condition $2,292; #4 Condition $3,820; #3 Condition $8,600; #2 Condition $13,370 and #1 Condition $19,100. If you think these prices are accurate is pretty much your guess. I have a 52 sedan such as this and I think they are realistic. Now your assignment is to guess somewhere at the condition it is in. If you think the car needs a full restoration (you will pay about 20K if you do all the work yourself) then start at the number 5 condition area. My guess from the photos is that this car is somewhere between a #5 and a #4

  • A complete Twin-H set with linkage like this alone is worth a minimum of $750, perhaps even more. Looks like a solid and complete ORIGINAL car.

  • Fellow Hudsonite,

I called back the person on the car and requested further pictures. The interior had been redone though the person swore that it was original to the car. All in all, it was a solid representation so I gave what I thought was a fair offer of $6000. Well, to make a long story short, they were looking to get $12,000 for the car. The owner did call back, a couple of times trying to defend the asking price but would not budge. Also when I asked about the condition of the outer perimeter frame, the coversation seemed to go elsewhere. So, I am back on the hunt. If any of you know where I can get a line on a solid bodied 52 or 53. Doesn't necessarily have to run. Let me know.

Hard to tell from the photos, but I think you offered a fair price. Sounds like their hopes are set rather high. Don't give up the search, just be patient. There's a Hornet out there with your name on it, I guarantee it.

Called him. It is off of a 56. Carbs are another $100. Would need to change the exhaust elbow to fit earlier models but solid deal. If Walt is selling it, you know it is in good shape.
