53-54 armrests
I am trying to properly attach my armrests on my 54. When I got the car, whoever upholstered it last just ran sheetmetal screws from the door panel into the armrest. According to the body manual there are two screws that go through the pocket that you remove to take the armrest on an off. Well that bracket is part of the armrest so is there another bracket that somehow bolts to the door and the armrest bolts to that with the two screws? I have got my door panel out and I am sure something is missing knowing this car. Does anyone have or could take pictures of their 53 or 54 with the armrest removed so maybe I can figure what is missing? It would be a great help.
Thanks,
Thanks,

Rob, the two sheet metal screws through the pocket go into an angle that is attached to the door. the armrest is stapled to the panel. If you are seeing a bracket as part of the armrest, is it possible that it is the one that should be attached to the door.0

So what you are saying is that when you remove the two screws then the armrest is supposed to come out with the panel and you should see an angle fastened to the door once the panel is removed?0

exactly, the arm rest and panel are individually covered before attaching together. The main panel needs a slot cut through to clear the bracket, probably about 3/8" to allow for the upholstry to wrap through the slot .0

Hello Rob, I just took took apart a '54 rear door with armrest, not sure if they are the same for your coupe. You can have them if you want. Also thanks for the plug on my Business! VicTor Z0

Thanks Victor. Does anyone know here?
Nick,if your take the two screws out in the finger grab area, does the armrest come off? If it does could you take a picture? I could make new brackets but looking at the bracket in the armrest I don't see how it would secure UNLESS the bracket in the armrest fits behind the bracket on the door like an interlock.0 -
Do you remove the door panels on a '54 Jet the same way?0

If the right thing comes to mind for me when you say interlock, then yes you could equate it. I picture an equipment door safety switch where rather than hitting an exposed actuator (where its easily bypassed) a tab fits into the switch body to activate the switch when the door is closed.
The armrest would be the female portion and the bracket would be the male.
As I mentioned earlier, the armrest is stapled to door board so removing the screws only allows the removal of the entire assembly. I did find a picture which shows the bracket on the door. Its the black piece in the center. Notice that the ends where it attaches to the door is wider than the portion that goes into the armrest, notice also the flange into the armrest is 45'ed .
It looks as though Victor may have a good example for you.0 -
Nick,
I did go over to Victors and he had two brackets like what you have shown here. He also had what was left of the door panel with the armrest secured to it. Since it was dark and he had to go we didn't have time to really look at it, but what seems once again weird with my armrest is that it is also L shaped. It appears to be original as it is contoured around inside for the armrest and it has the two mounting holes,BUT where it meets the door panel it turns down like an L so it doesn't look like it will fit with this door bracket. I will have to look more at it today but it appears that the armrest attatched to the panel that Victor gave me does not have an L. It is just flat toward the door panel where the mounting screws are. So it appears it just slides over the bracket and secures with the two screws. What is up with mine I don't know, but be a Hornet Special lots of things are weird.0
