You know the splasher engine was no slouch. Many State Police Agencies began buying in fleets using them for Pursuits around 1937 and still seen pictures of them in '47... \

They take well to few hop up mod's and I recall the bottom ends live suprisingly well...

Does this fit the 212ci engine? I had heard that there was a performance cam made for the splasher, but I have never seen one for sale??
  • I believe it fits the ones with the distributor mounted down on the

passengers side of the block below the tappet cover.

the 41-47 splasher had the distributor gear behind the rear cam

bearing but this one its infront of the rear bearing.

    thanks,

I don't think the distributor drive gear was behind the rear cam bearing ... that would be pretty unusual. This cam looks to be for '40-'47. Too bad the photo isn't a little more clear, but I don't know what that would be ahead of the rear cam bearing except the dist. drive gear.
  • Both my 1942 175 cid & 1947 212 cid had the distributor gear behind the

rear cam bearing. its the weirdest design I have seen for a distributor

drive. The rear engine plate the bellhousing bolts to actually seals up the

pocket the two gears set in. There is no support for the end of the cam

behind the distributor gear nor is there room for it!

This one will not work in the rear distributor 175-212 splashers.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news...

  • It should fit 212 splasher thru 1939.

The E-Bay site will now allow viewing a larger photo. That's pretty clearly a drive gear just ahead of the rear bearing. If that's not the way the "40-'47s are, I can't think of what other Hudson Six would have a drive gear there.
  • I just went out to the garage and checked a 35 cam I have sitting on a shelf. It looks to be the same cam with the dist and oil pump drive gears in the same place. Should fit a 212 ci up to about 39 or 40, when ever they went to the dist drive at the rear of the motor.

This is definitely for the earlier engines, 1934 through to 1940. The main difference is in the opening of the inlet valve @20 deg instead of 11, and opening the exhaust 15 deg sooner, plus an extra .068" lift. This is still well within the range of either the Step-Downs or Jets, as far as overlap is concerned, I'm not sure of lift, so it should certainly bring the performance up at the top end. I'm unsure if it will affect idling too much, but the Jet motor idles nice and smooth with over 70 deg overlap, and the Step downs with 63. Good luck to whoever gets it!

    Geoff.
  • Sorry; Tried to take a picture of a 35 and 47 cam side by side.

I don't know how to make the picture small enough to fit on my message.

    Any advice would be heplful

  • Rick;

Yahoo says that they can't deliver my e-mail, sorry

  • If that cam had the gear on the end like the bottom one in the picture I would have wanted it for my 212 in my 42 Hudson.

Any body know of someone in the US that can regrind these old Hudson splasher camshafts with more performance inspired patterns? I have talked to several different companies that regrind cams and none of them could or would do one as the master patterns do not exist any more.

I did talk to Colt Cams and he was willing to look at doing one as his equipment is computerized. He could read what the cam is now and suggest how big he could grind it. Only issue is having to ship to and from Canada with the expense of the boarder crossing.

Looks like the seller got top dollar for this one being new and unused.

    FYI

I had Isky reprofile Cams for me. They were for Hornets but Isky has made Cams since the '20's and made the EBay Cam. I am pretty certain they will still have the old 3/4 & full Race patterns available... Costs (a few yrs) ago was around $105...I think a few other Companys also regrind good cores... While your at it upgrade the timing Gear too.
