Electric Wiper Motor Conversion

If anyone has a 12 volt system, this might be what you need. I have a long wheel base 49 stepdown with twin H. I don't know if this will fit on a short wheelbase car with Twin H. Might be an air cleaner clearance problem.

A friend of mine loaned me an old worn out 57 wiper motor to check dimensions, After looking at it, I bought a rebuilt off Ebay. I'm told that Chevy offered a vacuum wiper as standard and an electric as an option back in the day. 57 is a two speed. I'm told that early ones may be single speed. They are both controled by a cable knob system just like Hudson. They also used a cable transmission system like Hudson except the cables where hidden under the dash.

The Chevy motor bolted directly onto the Hudson firewall bracket using the outer holes.I mounted the motor on the inside of the bracket to better align the cable operators with the original Hudson location. A couple 10-24 screws and a few washers and two nuts hold it on. I took the actuating arm and cable attachments off the old Hudson motor. You will have to grind or drill the shaft where it is bradded over the bracket to remove it. I didn't use a good motor for this. I had one that the mounting ears were broken off of.. I drilled and tapped two 6-32 holes in the Chevy and Hudson bar so the Hudson one is directly on top of the Chevy one. I used countersunk flat head screws and J-B Weld to make sure it doesn't come loose. All I had to do was provide a 12 volt wire to the wiper motor. No switches to replace.

Now the original wiper knob and cable give me two wiper speeds and much more power. That allows a bit more spring tension on the wiperblades too. Might help if it ever snows down here..LOL.

I Did Not take pictures, but if you find a Chevy wiper motor on Ebay, check the pictures, you will see that it is an easy conversion. Maybe three hours with interuptiions

Darned sight easier than some of the other mods I've done!:D

    Dave,

That is a Great Tip. I did an Electric Wiper conversion on '37 to '47 Hudson utilizing a JC Whitney Motor then posted the process earlier in this Forum.

I had not attempted my Stepdown yet, but you have simplified the conversion for all of us. Thanks
