center steering

Hi all,

I bought a rebuilt center steering assy about a year ago with the intent of using it on my 54 wasp. The other day I happened to compare it to the one in my car and was surprised to see that the arm with the ball on it is longer than the one in my car. So I compared it to the one in my 54 hornet and the hornet one is the same as the one in my wasp.

So I have this rebuilt center steering and have no idea of what it will fit. Any ideas?

I would say that the your rebuilt center steering assy is for a LWB car i.e. Hornet etc. The parts book lists a different part number for LWB cars.
  • I'll get some numbers off it soon. Only thing I can think of is that it might be for a car with power steering as the pitman arm was tighter to the frame on a power steering car.

From when I put PS on a 54 Hornet, I don't recall there being any difference in the center steering arm for a non PS or PS car.

If I did another PS conversion, I would shorten the center steering arm to speed up the ratio. The power assist is good enough to be able to speed it up a little.

Perhaps your part is from a pre-stepdown? I have zero experience on those cars.;)

LHD SWB & LWB stepdowns have different steering arms as was said about the different part numbers above. On both the distance from the pivot to the tie rods is the same, but the LWB has a longer arm from the ball to the pivot.

They interchange readily and will give different steering effort and steering speed.
