Hey, did anybody else notice that the fuel pump that Jack Clifford selected used 3 HP less!? (you have to read the fuzzy print in the Hot Rod Magazine article). Three horses is a LOT to a Model T guy. Do you think they're talking about the difference between a single-acting and double-acting pump, or is it that particular brand and model?

Roger, I asked Jack about that when he was drag racing and he told me to put a double type pump in a vice and a single and move the lever up and down with a Vice-Grip so i did. The double is very, very, very Hard to move compared to the single.

Jack did a lots of small tricks to the 54 that he never told anyone about but Dick Thorp, who did a lots of drag racing with Jack.

  • My Dad's been enjoying all the Hudson racing pictures here on the forum. He didn't have a picture, but he wanted to share this story.

"In the summer of 1963, I had a 1953 Hornet sedan with Twin-H Power, high compression aluminum head, Mallory ignition, dual range hydromatic and a 4:10 rear end. Hit the gas from a dead stop and you could point the headlights to the sky.

The Hornet was very competitive in the local street racing scene, even out-running the small V-8's of the day. One warm evening I was sitting at a stoplight with the windows down when a '58 Ford pulled up beside me, giving a few hits on the throttle. I thought 'He must not know much about this old Hudson!' The light changed, Hudson headlights tipped to the sky, and the Hudson was maintaining a full fender length ahead. Suddenly, I heard an awful roar coming through the open window. The Ford left me like I was sitting still.

That weekend at the Mason Dixon drag strip I saw that same Ford with it's hood up. There sat a 352 with dual 4 barrel carbs. The roar I heard had been the second 4 barrel opening up.

Unfortunately, Hudsons didn't win them all." - Lee Royer
