'48 Commodore Convertible at Auction
The guys at RM are smokin' the drapes if they think this car will bring $150K-$225K:

Nice car, but not $225,000 worth of nice.

Hmmmm.....
The Specifications say: "General Motors is reputed to have purchased a number of new Hudsons to scrutinize. For several years, these Hudsons were used as a standard of handling and performance at the GM Proving Grounds."
I'm sure that GM (and other car companies) purchased their competitors' vehicles to analyze, but -- "a NUMBER of new Hudsons?" And what's this about "a standard of handling and performance", and "for several years?? Sounds like it went beyond the normal run-of-the-mill comparison test.
Could be a lot of invented hoop-la to sell a car, of course. Has anyone ever documented this claim?0 -
A while ago on eBay a guy was selling GM pictures of Hudson out at their proving grounds. It was a Commodore and this guy was selling about 5 pics they showed the car from different angles and had a ruler on the photo to gauge scale and GM logo and numbers on them. Don't know about years but they were testing the car.0
-
It was a common practice to obtain the competitors (all brands) vehicles and test them. Then they were scrapped to get them off the road!0

Nice car, but not $225,000 worth of nice.
Hmmm! Wonder what a S S & S restoration would bring? LOL0 -
To go along with this if you look at Butlers book the 1948 section has a model maker working on the first stepdown designs in 1946. In the back ground is a 1942 Buick model.0
-
And 1950's Cadillac designers had pictures of Dagmar in their studio.0

So happens that this particular car used to belong to my dad. The car was painted and detailed years ago by Chris and Gene Davis. I can tell you that the 3 owners thing is pure bunk. It's a nice car, but they are going to be disappointed in their prediction on the bidding.0

Steve: What became of Spencer's collection of cars? I would especially like to know about the 49 Comm Sedan and the 54 Coupe. Do you know what happened to the 54 sedan I sold your Dad. I believe he told me that the car was sold to Ray Sparkman?
I remember viewing the Convertible and your Terraplane coupe at the Golden Colorado HET nationals. I have pictures of them somewhere.
Thanks0 -
nah, this car is going to sell for maybe 75K max. And that seems to be a bit high...
you look at the convertibles out there, many of them are terrific, very few fit in that 100K category.
Over the last couple of years, the best one I have seen, (don't anyone take offense here...) with attention to detail, really has to be Lew's... In my mind, legitimately, that is what I consider a 100K+ hudson convertible, where I feel that if it sold for an amount, similar, I don't think the price is over-inflated. I would feel the buyer got a great car for the money.
I also kind of am curious about Dennis's in NY, his looks like it has a similar build quality on it, and I want to see Nick's, it looks real nice, as well.
Something about Lew's that just plain separates itself from the crowd. I'm not even an 8 fan, but wow.
I look forward to each season, when we get a new hudson to oogle at the shows, and this year, I feel like Nick's might be my fav for the year. The colors really bring that car together.0 -
Bottom line is somebody is always willing to pay the price - which is why a lot of the fun and interest, for a lot of people, has gone out of the hobby these days.
We got far to many people who won't bring their Hudsons out to meets and I think part of the reason may be psychological - keep it hidden in the garage, neat and pristine, and someday maybe, just maybe, somebody will come along and spice up the retirement fund by $150 grand or more. And I've heard all the excuses: "well, it looked like rain today", or "it's really to hot and so we brought the brand-x with AC" (Ok, I'm older - I can buy that one). But there are shops out there that will fit your car with AC: and the best excuse I once heard?? "Didn't bring the Hudson today because the road's to rough!!!!" Huh??????? Yeah, I had a club member tell me that one. Anybody top that one???
I take my hat off (and Aunt Hester gives a tip of her bonnet) to those intrepid few who bring their cars out to, not only Hudson meets, but Brand-X meets and cruise nights as well - you folks deserve a real pat on the back for getting out and about.

Hi Ken, well, dad sold every Hudson he had. His '54 H Cp went to the same guy who bought the '48 C8 Cv that's now in the RM Auction. That guy sold it and the thing bounced all over the country. At one time it was sitting in Jack Miller's show room in Ypsilanti. I don't know where it is now. I can tell you that it really went down hill. The '49 sedan must be the '48 C6 Sd. It went to Charles Purma in Kansas and he still has it. That '54 H Sd. you mentioned did go to Roy Sparkman. Roy sold it to someone and I lost track of it. I still have my '37 T Cp and '54 H.Cp, both restored. Next project will be a '53 H.Cv. Email me sometime. steve0 -

Which is strange because if you click on the original thread, it says it sold for 181,000 . . . . . . which maybe includes the auction fees? Regardless, like it was mentioned earlier in the thread, cars (and everything else in this world) are worth what someone is willing to pay for it and what someone else is willing to accept for it.0 -
I was in my bookkeepers office a few months ago and saw a black Hudson Conv. on a calender. At one time, I owned a 49 C8 Conv. It was black when i bought it, had the same fog lights, grille guard, spotlights etc. When I asked about it , they gave me the print. . I have it on the wall near the computer and it is the same one on R&M Auctions. Same photograph. Did anyone identify the seller? Maybe I missed it..0

I guess the drapes were smoking! Auction report says it sold for 181,500.00, or 165,000.00 plus 10% auction fee of 16,500.00.0 -

The seller was Wayne Davis who got the car from Dr.Paige who bought the car from my dad. The car originally came from California where my dad bought it. The price this car commanded at auction just proves up that quality work always pays off in the end. Gene and Chris Davis painted that car for my dad over 25 years ago and it still looks fabulous.0 -
Thanks,
Wayne sure had a beauty!
I agree.. Quality really does count!0 -
So, lets see - that should make that '49 sedan I got rusting into the mud out back of the barn worth, what - maybe $100,000???
Think I'll hold out for $150k, tho.
