Heater motor
My motor was sounding a bit noisey so I pulled it out to see if I could get it rebuilt and converted to 12V. I have no idea how to get the fan off. I removed the set screw and assumed the assembly would come off the motor shaft. The top of the shaft is slightly mushroomed so it won't slide over. What's the magical catch here?

File off the mushroom--support the hub from the back side and couple licks with a flat tip drift punch on the shaft ought to get it. BUD0

When you get the fan off the shaft, measure the shaft and the motor and you should be able to find a 12 volt replacement. The cost of repairing the original will be more than buying the replacement.0

Good advice on grinding off the mushroom, I would use a wheel puller if I could though unless of course you decide not to save the motor. If not a wheel puller then support the fan well and hit the shaft with a drift about the same size as the shaft, make sure the motor doesn't fall and break.

If I grind the mushroom off it will come off easily as it is moving up and down on the shaft. I just don't know how they got it on originally and if I grind the mushroom off will it work right after I reassemble it?0

Rob, the mushroom is probably there because it came off once and someone lost the set screw that kept it tight on the shaft, so the peened the end over to keep the blades from coming off. I'm thinking you will find there is a flat spot on the shaft that a set screw goes up against. Use a file or a dremel tool, you don't want to take off to much shaft, just take the end down to the original diameter.

So the mushroom is not factory? The set screw was there and you can see the flat spot in the shaft. That was what was mystifying me at first until I decided the push the fan down first. It went just far enough that I could see the mushroom. No wonder I couldn't pull it off.0
