De-scaling the water jacket
Background:
My 46 pickup's 212 I-6 has been running hot, I've replaced the radiator, hoses, thermostat, fixed the baffle on the external water manifold and checked the water pump, and flushed the block. Got a lot of crud out but its still not right and there is alot of rust in there.
Experiment:
I drained the cooling system, removed the radiator plugged the hoses and filled the engine (water jacket) with this magic juice from http://www.safestrustremover.com/# started the engine, let it run for 5 minutes and let it sit, then started it again this morning and let it warm up again (I was told that the juice works better at higher temps) . I'm curious to see how it works out.
Well, I'll find out tonight if the great experiment worked.
I'll let you folks know what happens.

Hi
1 Are You Running A Thermastat If Not The Water Might Be Running Through The Rad Faster Than It Can Be Cooled
2 Have You Checked the Water Jacket To See If The Inner Plate Is Still There The Inner Plate Has Holes In It Bigger In The Rear And Smaller As You Go Forward This Might Also Be A Problem
3 Are You Sure It's Running Hot Check Your Temp. With Some Thing Other Than The Gauge It May Be Off Or Your Sending Unit Could Be Bad All Things To Check

If the water jacket baffle plate has corroded and you need a replacement, I have the info on how to make a new one.

Some success!!!
Lots of crud came out with the rust remover and it looks nice and clean when you look into the head through the t'stat hole.
It no longer over heats (used to boil over) but it still runs 3/4 hot according to the gauge. I am currently looking for an aftermarket gauge to see what that says...should I mount the sender in the same spot as the factory sender?
I am running a 7 lb cap and 180 degree t'stat, may try a 160
I made a new plate for the baffle and welded it into the the manifold. using Alex's template and what was left of the old baffle as a guide. I am going to remove the manifold tonight to see how well the rust remover worked.0 -
I think your 180 degree thermostat is whats causing the temp. guage to read at 3/4. In that era 165 thermostats were typical. Why not put a thermometer in the radiator to check your actual running temperature? Hudsonly,---Cliff Minard.0

Also if you still can't get it check the water distribution tube behind your water pump. Busting out the water jacket block caps fluching the water jacket is a great idea.... I used a 6 hp power washer on my block and ran it in ever direction I could reach through the block plugs........you should use a lot of water presssure for doing that until that block runs clear.0

Anyone have an extra brass water distribution tube for sale for a 308 (I prefer a 55-56 model, but a 53-54 would be just fine as an option).
Please send me a Hudson Forum private message if you have one for sale.

Another trick to loosen rust scale on a block is to use a piece of speedometer cable chucked up in a drill motor. Make sure it doesn't get loose and whack you! it can be fed through the freeze plug ports if they are out as well as down into some areas you would never be able to reach otherwise. I have used this method for years and never ceased to be surprised at what comes loose after the block comes back from the "boil out" at the rebuilder!.0

uc4me, If you go to the top and click on search, then enter water jacket we had some good advice regarding this problem with my Terraplane engine last year. Hope it helps. I did have trouble after the new radiator and it turned out the timing was off. Once I adjusted the timing my problem went away. I spent about $400 and several days trying to correct mine. Live and learn. Good luck!0
