Can I install wider tires?

Hi everyone, My 28 calls for a 600-19 tire size, the tires on the car were mixed 525/550-19, 600-19 and 650-19. The 500 series tire is 3.5. The 600 series tread sizes appear to be the same, 4.5. Whats the dif? Can or should I put a 650-19 size or stick with the Manufacturers recomended size? Thanks for any suggestions you great guys may have. Sincerely Phil

  • Any time you increase tire width you increase rolling resistance, and turning resistance. Uses up a bit more power to turn it also, I would NEVER go down on tire size. One step up wouldn't make a great deal of differance, and often results in a more stable 'Feel" when driveing. All in all, your not after carrying heavier loads or such so best to stick with the Mfg. sugestion unless you desire the more stable feel which results from a bit more road contact with one size up. My 29 had 650-19s on it (wood wheels). I have not noticed any problems.

Generally, most "vintage" tyres are a smaller profile than the originals used. Also they now have a "Ply rating", either 4, 6, or 8 ply, but in fact they are all four ply, whereas in vintage years 6 ply meant just that, and they were a heavier and less flexible tyre than we get today. I suggest you shop around and see which tyre has the best profile (size wise). I had tyres on my '29 7 pass. sedan which all said 6.50 x 19, but the front ones were considerably smaller than the rear. Larger tyres will give you of course a slightly better ride, and higher gear ratio over all. The smallest tyres I found were Firestone and Universal, and the largest were Lester and Classic. But I would definitely go for 650 x 19 in any case, as they will be closest to the original 31 x 6 original size.

    Geoff.
